Tons of negative space.
I'm not even sure if I like these myself, so feel free to give your opinions (don't let the fact that I cry easily influence you).

Scanned from slides.
Decent shots as is. For my tastes, a 1/3 right crop on the first one would be nice. As bright as the BG is, any serious shadow reduction in either image would produce too much noise. I kind of like the figure/ground effect of the shots. Like images in a freshman psych book. "It is it a vase, or two faces?"
Jo, there isn't really any detail in the shadow areas in the original chrome.
Tim, yeah, a crop on the right side would make sense.
But I was going for excessive negative space from the beginning. I guess I got it, although that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I know the text book image you're talking about, Tim; I thought it was a duck.

Yep, I'm afeard there's just not enough detail here. I otherwise am not bothered by the negative space.
I also know the book Tim is talking about. I thought it was a cigar.
