Love this thread, there's some funky photos here.

Here's another one of mine... I'd appreciate any feedback on how I could've shot it better. EXIF should be there, but just in case, ISO400 f/6.3 1/125s. I must say 450D is a little frustrating to use. Even ISO400 is VERY noisy. I might pick up 50D or 5DII to use this lens on.

n0b0, they are beautiful birds!

I am assuming you are shooting with the 400mm 5.6?

From the advice I have been given here the lens works bets with a higher shutter speed.

I would have also PS'd out the distracting branch in front of them and some additional sharpening in PS

Hey Wing, did you get this squirrel in Palo Alto? Very nice! I only got a couple pelicans, a few surfers and some landscape stuff this weekend. Pretty bad for 2 days out up and down the central coast.

The woodchucks were shot at Palo Alto while the lazy squirrel was shot awhile back in my backyard.

I was out at the Baylands and Byxbee Park (right next to each other) in Palo Alto this weekend and got a number of birds including a colony of Black-crowned Night Herons, Dowitchers, a couple of Willets, Canada Geese, Red-wing Black Birds, an American Kestrel, a couple Northern Harriers, a flock of long distance White Pelicans, hummingbirds, American Avocets, Stilts, Barn Swallows, and even a Pheasant all of which I am working hard to process and post some on the Nature+Wildlife board in next few days. It was a very productive place, I even caught a few Groundhogs and a rabbit while I was taking a break.

(AF picked up the grass in front of him and he ran away before I had a chance to try MF)

Oh you're welcome Noelle! I thought you'd like them. So what happened to the thread? Jet planes, squirrels of all sizes, chipmunks... haha! We have strayed far from BIF haven't we? Did you see (I think page 7) the other surfer shots I put up? I had such a good time taking those I think I'll go again today after work!

Conrad.... thanks for the Seals!! I love them

That last image is very funny, especially the head first guy with his foot sticking out of the water.

Sweet! I can't wait to see your pictures from there. Harriers huh? I saw a couple in Alviso but they were flying so low and moving so fast before I knew it they zipped by and where GONE! Ok hurry up and process them already! Haha!!! Have a good day man!

Thanks noelle!! It was shot at 400mm 5.6 but the lens is 100-400L.

I understand that higher shutter speed advice but it's a lot harder to do on a Rebel body with high ISO noise, even ISO400 is very noisy let alone 800 or 1600, any high speed shutter advantage I get will be outweighted by the noise. That's why I'm thinking about picking up a 50D or 5DII.

For now, I'll just try the PS workflow. Thanks again!!

Haha! Don't be sorry. I love the OT pictures. I think the whole point is learning about learning how to shoot it all right? I can't believe how fat that one squirrel PetKal put is! Yikes! Looks like he ate a whole bag of peanuts. Hehe... I'll check back later to see what you got today!

Wow those are very colorful conures n0b0! At least I think they're conures. Hehe... I'm not sure why the picture is noisy at ISO400. But my suggestion (or warning) for the 50D, even though I love the ability to crop with the 15MP and all, is that it tends to be noisy as well. I'm sure you've seen the comments about this. Its the nature of the camera to BE noisy when one crams so many pixels so close together on a crop sensor. I find that to get my BIF shots around late afternoon light to be at 1/1000 or faster (I shoot mostly in Av mode) that I have to get the ISO to be at about 800 or so. My surfer shots were at ISO500 taken around noon. A bit overkill as you can see some of them had shutter speeds of about 1/2000 all the way up to 1/8000! Haha! But it's a learning curve. I suppose I could have used the Tv setting instead. I'm going out again today to try it again. I couldn't recommend the 5D mk II for wildlife. I mean the pictures are almost noise free even up to ISO800 but at 3+fps its pretty slow. Though I've seen tons of great shots here using that even with the slow-to-focus 100-400mm (a lens I also have and love by the way but I believe its flexibility has its drawbacks). I just use noise removal software on my photos taken with my 50D.

ahhh... now I understand a bit better.

If you can get the 5DII I would do it.....it is a great camera!

I would love to see more images of those birds....so pretty!

Thanks Conrad, it's actually a rainbow lorikeet. They're very comfy among humans.

5DII 3fps is no worse than the XSi, which is the body I'm using now. What I'm more worried about is losing the crop factor.

Here's another one at 400m. a Tasmanian devil.

The 5D II fps is enough but for birding crop cameras still rule.

Ah... lorikeet! Awsome! Man the dof on that tazmanian devil is pretty thin! Looks sharp though! You're worry about the crop factor loss in the 5DII is fairly warranted. I went shooting with my buddy and I used my 50D+400mm and he used my 5dII+100-400mm and while we were shooting with at the same birds, my shots were just much better because I could "get in" closer. Even if you identically resized two images of the same moment of the same bird from the two different camera setups, the ones from the 5DII, while noise free, were just not as good as the one from the 50D. But that has been my experience. (that's why i usually take two cameras and a couple lenses out just in case!)
