Pretty sweet shots GeneO! Thanks for sharing! The handheld shots are fun for sure but I wonder how much improvement I'd see if I used a tripod with maybe a ball/gimbal head? I've seen it used. Seems cumbersome. Hmmm...

The lens is light enough to use with a ball head (except for BIFof course). I have used it on an AS-B1 and it was just right, It is a little small for a gimbal - for BIF hand held is the way to go.
Though it has a kind of crappy lens collar, one nice thing about it is you can have it on a ballhead and use the lens collar release as a quick release. It is faster than unclamping a normal Arca clamp.
Here is one with that rig at 1/20s, mirror lockup, remote release:
Slim pickings today.......the 400 f/5.6 is OK for more distant targets, however, not as good for "close combat" PIFs. Gotta go back to 200mm and 300mm.

Wow Gene that is one sweet BCNH! Mirror lockup as well? I only use that when I photograph the moon! Never considered it for wildlife.

At least you had something to photograph Peter! Haha! Great shots! Oh and thanks for that link!
Conrad, there is always something to photograph. Like today, there was that police zodiac on the lake. Nowhere it is written that the 400 f/5.6 may be used for wildlife only.
