p.1 #1 · re: best strobes that can plug into the wall

I was wondering what people prefer for stobes, i am looking for some that i can plug directly into the wall. I am currently using some ellinchrons but am not very happy with the quality. This is my second set that does not work properly. ( i can get into that if someone wishes). As such i am looking to get into a better system, or at least start piecing one together. So i am looking for heads that can be plugged directly into the wall. Any suggestions?
thanks
craig

Sorry to hear that your Elinchrom's aren't working for you. I have 2 600RX's and one 300RX and they work great.

A strobe that plugs directly into the wall they are called mono lights.

If you really want "best," I'm pretty sure Bron makes monolights.

Thanks for the reply,
The Elinchroms that i have are the d 2's, but i am glad that you have had no issues with yours.
So far, I cannot find any other then the Alien bees, and elinchroms that plug into the wall. Does profoto make one? anyone know of any others out there?

What you're referring to is monolights. Profoto does make them. So does Speedotron, Bowens, and indeed Broncolor, as well as lots of mid-range manufacturers.

Just type monolight into the search features on BH or Adorama. Both of these places are really good with exchanges if you have any problems. The new Elinchrom Style 500 BXRi and 250BXRi's look nice. They are a step up from the models that you have. They also have the skyports built in for wireless firing of the strobes. I believe the kits with include the transmitter as well. I personally prefer the models with digital backs instead of the analog adjustments of the AB's. I also have a few of the Impact (B&H brand monolights) and for being inexpensive, they work pretty well.

There is a substantial difference between the D-Lite 2's and the RX series. Not that that D-Lite 2's are bad, but they are entry level. I own a couple, they work fine and are comparable to much on the market. RX600's are best of breed and in a class by themselves when it comes to monolights, IMO. Can't comment on the 500 BXRi's, but the 400BX's were excellent workhorses too.

Good luck.

Point your web browser to B&H Photo and search for studio lighting and you'll see a good sample of what is available.

If you're not happy with the quality of light that your D-Lite2's produce, then you're not likely to be happy with anything else (unless you have duds). If you're not happy with the quality of construction and want something sturdier, moving up the Elinchrom food chain will be the cheapest solution - that way you get to keep all your light modifiers.

It might be useful to explain what types of problems you are having with the D-Lites. Otherwise we may just help you by "solving" the wrong problem

Best,
Michael

I have long time experience with Profoto and Multiblitz monos and some with Broncolor mobil, some time ago moved from Profoto to Multiblitz, Multiblitz is a great monoblocks with Broncolor quality but has very very bad service like Broncolor, with Profoto I'm never touched the service, now I have AlienBees and White Lightning and I'm happy, my Multiblitz Profilux 600 for back up cause longer time flash to flash, but still very accurate, actually more accurate than White Lightning, but for people photography it within spec.
