i received my softbox grid today and i wanted to know if the other diffusion panels are necessary.
grid > outer diffuser panel
outer diffuser > grid
or should i just go with
inner diffuser > grid?
how do you guys use yours?

One of the things the grid is designed to do is to cut spill and lens flare. I use one on my hairlight SB for that reason because I've got low ceilings in my basement shooting space:

In that application it works better on the outside
