any ideas or place I can go to buy used speedotron stuff? I live in LA and dont really know where to look besides craigslist. (dont want to quite pay new for a pack and heads)
Have any of you guys used them much? How is the flash consistency between shots?
Speedotron seems to be ridiculously popular in rental places?
I have some Speedotron Brownline if you are interested.
Two older 800 Ws packs, well used, plus one newer 600D Ws pack that is barely used. Some M11 heads, which can use the interchangeable reflectors and accessories of the Blackline. Plus a newish MW3 and M90 head, good for hair, fill, etc.
They are good, solid units. A little clunky, but if you use 2-3 packs it is easy enough to set levels individually for main, fill, and background. The Brownline are nice for portrait lights in the studio or location. Relatively inexpensive, gvo forever.
Biggest drawback is that they will pop at just 80% of a full charge (as will Alien Bees, etc.) Solution is to wait a couple of seconds after the ready beep.

I was at a camera show last week end, and the largest camera store in my area had three power pack looking units with several boxes of lights. They picked this stuff up from a large pro studio. Email me if you are interested, and I will follow up with them on what they have.
I have the Blackline 1205 pack and three 202 strobes. They are built like a tank and used ones should be fine, as long as you don't get them from a school or rental store sale. They are also heavy, which does not bother me but does some. They work, and work and work, which is a strong suit for them. The price is good for the quality you get, IMO. I had the power pack kicked over by an insane theatre hand and you would never know...even the paint on the darn thing was perfect.
Flashlights is a dealer for Speedotron and Elinchrom in Pasadena, CA. They have a large rental department and I think they also do repairs. Good people, give them a call they may be able to help you.
