Normally, on new products outgoing quality is lower. It takes time running through lots of units to tweak in the production line. It's difficult to test or inspect that out. Wait a qtr and the outgoing quality will be much better.

Hey folks, is there any chance of getting this lens less than $2500 right now?

Adorama was putting these on eBay where you could use Bing 8% Cash Back, however they don't have any posted at the moment, perhaps due to them be closed for the long holidays. I think they reopen middle of next week, and if they still have some they might start reposting them at that time. When I first saw them on eBay, it said they had 80 or so, then a couple of days later they appeared to be down to 40 available. They did not offer free shipping on the eBay listings, whereas buying from the store you could get free shipping but only 3% cashback.

Any non-working photogs make the transition from 70-200 Mark 1 to Mark 2? Commentary please.

I guess most non-working photogs are waiting for the new item price premium to drop off first

As a working photog, when I heard about the mk2, I told myself I don't need to change my mk1 quite yet and that I could put it on hold for a few months. The more I see of it (except for QC issues), the more I realise I need to upgrade, and my mk1 is a sharp copy! Time for a meeting with the ol' bank manager...

As a hobbyist, yes. Made the jump 3 wks ago. I have debated for a while then I decided to use the new lens as a prime (since is quite sharp and low CA ) with zoom capability.
One lens elminates the need for carrying 85mm/135mm/200mm where F2 or faster is not needed. Most importantly... great for sports shooting especially its focus lock is more predictive and twice as fast AF than the mk I IS. Very quiet motor as well. shorter min focus distance allow close up photography as well.

I have 200/2 and 70-200 2.8 IS MK1 and i think i will upgrade to 70-200 mk2. The zoom is really small and sometimes a zoom is just what you need. I never liked the image quality the 70-200 2.8 IS gave me, so yes i will upgrade but i am in no hurry, i can wait a few months until the price drops from msrp.

Having trouble to concentrate at work today as one of my dogs are seriously ill
I was checking the local photoshops on-line. Surprised they did have a new stock of the mk2... Sneaked out of office and stuffed the dogs in the car and off we went!
Only had a few minutes playing before darkness but it sure looks like a winner!
BTW I do have both the mk1, 135 and 200/2 and my gut feeling is only the mk1 will go!

Being an owner of the MKI I can tell you that isn't true. The lens (MKI) is very sharp, yes, but there is room for improvement (especially if you want to use the lens with a TC). I can assure you that most people looking to upgrade from the MKI to the MKII are not looking to do so solely for the extra stop of IS effectiveness--they will do so mainly for the IQ boost the MKII is reported to have.

My 70-200 is very good wide open through the range, but to say it can't be improved? ouchies.

Having only snapped a few pics so far, I find the IS better, and IQ clearly better wide open! As 90 per cent of my pics are close to wide open, this will allow me to stay 2,8 rather than go down to 3,5 or 4 to get the sharpness. Looking forward to see how it takes the 1,4x. The Mk1 did not like the converter, unless stopped down at leas 1 stop, wich makes it not that great for my usage.

A big bonus (for me) is the new AF/MF switch that resembles the old non-IS and is flush with the body. More than one I found that my Mk1 had the swith set to MF.

Just curious if anyone has the 400 f/5.6 and the mkII and has comapred results ? I've sold my 400 DO and was thinking about getting a 400 f/2.8 but I have a hard time dropping 5K+ even on a used one.
I am thinking of picking up a 400 5.6 until I stumbled across this thread. I am interested in the tracking ability of the mkII with a 2x. I won't be using the 400 range alot but it would be nice to have in a pinch. I don;t like the results of my f/2 200 IS with the 2xII.
If this has laready been asked, my apologies.
TIA.

I'm with you - tracking ability and AF speed of the mkII with either of the canon TC's.

I finally had the opportunity to take the MKII for some work out this past Sunday at the Cambodian New Year Parade in Long Beach. I'm liking it so far.

All shot at 2.8 with 5D2

I think I'm going to buy the 135 for awhile then sell the 135 and 70-200 2.8IS for the MK2.

Why buy the 135/2 if you're already plan to sell it?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
