My daughter returned to college this morning and last night I got this question...
"Dad, when I took your other camera (30D plus Tamron 17-50) to Miami last time I was home it took such good pictures. Do you mind if I borrow it when I go back to school tomorrow?"
Question 1 - could any father here say no to this question?
Great dilemma. Maybe you could insist on her taking a few extra CF cards and a flash along with it? Most virtuous acts are motivated by love.
Wow, what nice people Or maybe I'm just a meanie? I guess it depends. Good kid? Responsible? Respectful of materials and items? Knows how to use it besides teh little green square? I just returned form a weeklong trip to Daytona for Bike Week adn I took my wife's little pocket Sony Cybershot (7.2 MP) and it worked fine. Sorta... I sure could have used some lens choices but, hey - it fit in my pocket adn didn't burden me. I would think most people might be happy with that. SHe is. But if there's anew camera in it for you, opportunity knocks. Answer!
No, just a lawyer whose clients have been known to steal money.
Here she is by the way
unedited, uncropped jpeg
A lot of summer camps, private lessons and college tuition involved here. She will graduate next year with a degree in dance and then hopefully off to the Rockettes. She was class valedictorian and made straight As from 1st grade thru graduation. I wanted her to pursue a more academic-related career but I guess ya gotta follow your dreams. (I am praying for a rich husband)
Give her the camera/lens and buy yourself some better beer. Faced with a similar question several years ago I caved.
Last week we shot an E session together, most of the pics they selected were hers....with my "borrowed" 70-200 f2.8 VR!
She's got a great eye and I felt a rush of pride when she said "you're goin' down old man" Hand to God.
Yes, I believe it's gone forever. However, you have bigger problems now that spring break is around the corner. Who knows what makes it into that CF card?
By the way, my 3 year old boy just asked for a computer this morning. What do you say to that?

You say, "Get a job."
The day my daughter is strong enough to hold my 40D/5D and coordinated enough not to drop it within 2 minutes of holding it is a day that I very much look forward to. Not so much the going off to college part.

Question 2 - is it now gone forever?
Question 3 - if the answer to 2 is yes, can I now declare it to be next Christmases present hence nothing under the tree for her on 12/25/2009?
I really love that Tamron lens and I generally do not drink in the morning but my Budweiser is being diluted as I type...Show more →
well semi-closer to being the daughter (make that son) than the dad myself, but i will answer anyway
1. no
2. yes
3. i'd like to say no
but you could try to do that but being that 12/24/09 is so far off don't count on a 300 2.8 IS not showing up under the tree as a little extra
(and if the vote for #3 turns out to be 95% no and they are mostly all from brand new registrations maybe someone is on to you hah )
Well John kiss that camera goodbye. As to the upcoming Christmas present your not off the hook by a long shot. Expect, A, a hint for a better camera, B, a hint for lenses/flashes/etc, C, all of the aforementioned. I bought my 19 year old his own 50D when I found one of my D3's laying on the front seat of his car about to go to the beach. Chance for you to spend money, help the economy.
1. Yep, say good-bye to that camera and lens.
2. No that won't work for Christmas unless you say that now even then it won't last.
3. If she agree's geta her a flash for Christmas and Yourself something nice also...
Here's how I would handle it, if the 30D and Tamron were important to me. Which they would be.
"Yes dear, it does take good pictures, but you know what, so does the SD1200, and it is so much more convenient to carry. Let's go look at one and see what you think." Then go, and if she oohs and aahhs over the colorful little camera, buy it for her. Best couple of hundred bucks you can spend.
1. Sure, many could, but I'd let her have it. College will likely be some of the most wonderful days of her life.
2. Who cares? It's not like a 30D is worth much now anyway.
3. You can declare it a future Christmas present, but it will have no affect on what you put under the tree next December. There, some hard facts to digest.
