p.7 #1 · Mark III-Recall again ?

My all time favorite movie.. Hope & Glory. This is the perfect line for this situation with Canon.. Another one would be "Never trust a Rat, Billy".. lol

Seriously i think 80% of the posters here in this thread dont even own a 1dMK3.
Well i have a 1Dsmk3 and a 1Dmk3 and i am perfectly happy with there performance.
I mean the D3 was blown away in every head to head test with the 1D.
I mean there have basically been NO posts regarding the original issues that affected "some" 1Dmk3's here or almost anywhere for ages. And i cant even remember seeing a post regarding the issue Canon are recalling on.
In fact almost everyone using them (as opposed to those who talk aimlessly about them) is absolutely stoked with the quality of the AF and its accuracy.
I mean just take a look through the wildlife threads to check out some stellar MK3 images. So Canon come out doing the "right thing" that there is an isue with some units regarding off center focusing and the world has stopped.
I mean i have used an off center focus point in two years of using both cameras maybe 6 times with no probs what so ever so mine are staying in my bag.
As for Nikon maybe guys thinking about jumping ship may want to check out there board and the issue about metering which is has been popping up since release on the D3.
Canons biggest mistake on the 1Dmk3 was making the AF so advanced and customizable that 20% of the guys using them still have no idea how to set up the fastest most accurate AF i have ever used. The same people who expect a formula one car to set itself for every track it drives on all by itself.
Sorry but most of those guys should of stuck with P+S cameras and leave the real gear with people who have some idea what they are doing...and yes im tired of reading pulp form people who have no idea,no experience and dont even use the gear.

I think it is more like 60% of the complaints don't know how to use them and 40% have equipment problems - many stemming from early batches that Canon has never been able to set right. Just a wild guess. The don't yet know how to use them includes experienced and knowledgeable photographers - the camera's AF is touchy.

You think Canon is recalling the 1D3 and 1Ds3 to dumb the camera down? You didn't say as much, but your post thinks this. Of course, I've never met you, so I'm way off kilter. Apparently Canon designed this radically powerful AF with mental telepathy which you must have a highly acute sense of!

this comment seems pretty unhelpful. Clearly some very skilled photographers are getting good results with the mk3's and others aren't. At least some cameras are flawed in a subtle but important way. I used to own both 1D3 and 1Ds3, and experienced few problems, but I am not a sport shooter, and I don't test AF systems very hard.

It's actually good news that Canon is continuing to pursue this in the interest of existing mk3 users. Once all mk3 AF bugs are stamped out, it will be a good AF system. However, I hope Canon is working on something much more advanced, and will be careful to test it to death before releasing it, as in my opinion even the best current DSLR AF systems are a long long way from ideal.

Gene you should lighten up a little, it's a tongue-in-cheek response to mike's post.

I'm glad they have openly admitted a fault but it has to make you wonder how many more AF issues they'll find?

I'm more than happy with my 1D II and I'll wait for the 1D IV now. The 1D III probably is a much better camera overall than the 1D II, but I would always have that doubt in my mind when I got OOF shots, was it me, was it the camera and when spending several thousand dollars it's unacceptable to me.

"See they are doing the customer a service. Raise the prices and then announce the camera still can't focus properly - brilliant."

"Yeah, and everyone thought Canon didn't have anything special up their sleeves. Two unaffordable lenses, a firmware update and an AF recall - hallelujah"

Sorry, I didn't see the tongue in cheek, only sarcasm

Couldn't agree with you more with the proviso they should have never gotten in this fix in the first place. I had a pre-order in for this camera but canceled and got a Mark IIN instead when the original AF issues surfaced. I waited over a year to get it and so haven't suffered the sub-mirror fix others have encountered.

For me I have no major complaints with my 1d3. I have only had it since December and only used it for eagle flight shots or family photos mostly with center point. But I do use off center points regularly when shooting stills of wildlife spring-fall so am sending it in for inspection/fix if needed.

If you count all the comments in this thread, how many do you believe to actually be helpful?

We see the same comments whenever there is any news on the Mark III. It's amazing that even people that have sold their cameras, or have never owned the Mark III, still feel the need to jump into these threads to post negative comments!

Well I can empathize with that. I was disappointed when the AF issues appeared. This was my dream wildlife Camera on paper. I think a lot of peoples disappointment is the root of these comments - even though they don't own one, they wanted to. Nevertheless, time to get over it and deal with what it is or switch brands IMO.

I agree. My older one happened to be in there for Error 99 as of Monday, and today the website says it's finished. Then I want to give the outer AF points a test or two and see how it looks. They told me on the phone today the AF would be checked out also.

Canon announced today a new AF manual for ALL Canon EOS cameras manufactured within the last 4 years. Instructions are as follows:

1) use center point AF only (in bright light with lots of contrast)
2) when 1 (above) fails, use manual focus

We sincerely apologize for making customers read lengthy manuals in the past. We at canon are pleased to help our customers get the most from our products.

No I already scheduled mine - a newer yellow dot. Supposed to get UPS sticker in email in 48 hours. It is going to Newport News - like the sub-mirror fix.

Note that this fix is for issue when using an AF point other than the center that some cameras may experience

There is also a service notice for error 99 mirror problems.

If this "recall" forces me to send it to VA for the fix, I may just forego it. VA screwed my 1D3 up bigtime after they replaced the submirror. Only after a trip to Irvine were they able to fix the calibration problems VA introduced.

I apologize if the thread already covered this because I fast forwared to the end.... I spoke with a canon pro rep today at PMA. He said they are replacing the entire mirror box assembly and have a new firmware update. He said it seems to have solved all the problems, but we have heard that before.......I plan on sending mine in as soon as I can arrainge a back up! Baseball season is here!!!!!

Or stick with what you've got. No need to switch brands (yet), I'm happy with the 1D II even though it's almost 5 yo.
