mine, too. I would bet they all get the washers and / or spacers regardless of what it says. What is written on the paper is a code anyway. I have sent mine back 4 times and at least two of them had the exact verbage. (neither time fixed it). I am not ready to proclaim this time a fix yet. been burned too many times, but did a shoot this week with it and was very pleased with how well it focused in one shot, better than it ever has before. Shooting sports in bright light will be the real test.

As I said above. my later model (month before the change in production for the new adjustment procedure) had no hardware, only adjustments - I called Canon and they confirmed this. I am not the only one.
Regarding the repair statement on the paper, it's quite standard the way they state the repair, even your FW is the newest version when you sent it in, they still reinstall the FW etc..
About the WASHER thing, when i called them, the tech read the repair record on their computer told me there were WASHER etc involved for the repair, but on my paper work showed nothing..
As long as the camera works, I really don't care what they did
Cheers..
Yah, that wording IS standard. I have seen it EVERY TIME(4...5? lost track now) I've sent my camera in.
mine arrived in NN , va on the first and got an email saying it is already n route back to me! FAST! will post what was done and any improvements! (I did not have a prob with mine, but sent it in to be sure it was checked out)
Keep your fingers crossed... Sent my MARK III in for service on Friday, March 13, 2009, from San Diego to Newport News on the Canon UPS shipping label. As of 3/19/09 according to UPS it was out for delivery.... it has since disappeared. I opened a lost package report with UPS but was ultimately told since I was not the "SHIPPER" I have no claim. Called Canon Service Center in NN .... who in turn transferred me Canon Customer Service. They started an investigation on 3/27/09. Called today 4/3/09 ...it's still missing... Hopefully NO ONE else has had a similar experience... if you have I'd like to know your outcome...
I gosh Bob! Hope it shows up soon! YIPES! I am sure Canon will be responsible and surely it was insured so it will be resolved somehow if it doesn't show. I know the weather has delayed some of them.
Mine just arrived an hour ago and looks great.
They put a new LCD protector on and said the AF was adjusted and the firmware was updated.
I shot some in the house and see no difference, but of course, it is the fast action where I will be testing it out as soon as possible and will report back.
Mine went in the the Canon Service centre together with my 85L, 135L, 16-35L, 24-105L and 300L. It took CSC 3 days to adjust my 1D3 AF, and claibrated all my lenses with the body. Cool job. Now the Canon system that I own is fully dependable. I was having lots of doubt on my skills for a while and has been wondering what is wrong with my technique.
Registered for check up
Call back after exactly 7 working days
collected last wednesday.
Inspected at the door for visible signs of damage and packaged.
Call back on friday, camera on the way back.
We'll know next monday how it ends, but so far it looks like a smooth operation. Maybe I am too naive, but I'm certainly impressed by Canon's action up to this point.
Mine is a 511xxx, so ancient compared to most (not that it shows)
Nope everything was FOC. Took the chance to ask them to calibrate the entire system that I have except for some MF lenses such as MPE65 which I did not ask them to calibrate.
The MkIII came back early today, delivered by UPS.
It is clear they're re-calibrated the body, since my old MA settings are now off.
Looks like they are much closer to zero than before. In theory I should get the same or better results by just setting MA to zero, but looks like I have to adjust to the new AF behavior as well (as a new 1D convert).
Feels faster, but that could be the placebo effect.

Did you say that your has been in 4 times for the AF fix? If so, has there been any improvement with each trip back? Mine is back for the 2nd time now.
While my AF is accurate, it hunts more often in good light with a good target (e.g. a red-winged blackbird against a light tan background) than before the AF calibration and the firmware update. And by hunt I mean go to the focus limit and back for both my 400/5.6L and 500/4L + 1.4X (I haven;t enough data points with the bare 500 yet).
Mine has been in four times. Once I got it back and sent it right back in. The third fix seemed to helps some but I got it back so late that I couldnt do any bright light ourdoor sports with it since they were all over. Shooting basketball it seemed some better for awhile but then I started getting oof umages for no reason. I was just preparing my "case" with dvd's of pics etc to send it in for the 4th time when this fix was announced and I sent it in on the day it was announced.
Because the fix always is accompanied by rain and or snow upon receipt of the camera I am not ready to say it is right yet but it is definitely better in single shot, much more accurate and consitent focus, very noticable.
I got if for shooting sports though and until I get out and shoot some track in bright light were it could not find focus well before, I won't give it the thumbs up. Canon has trained me to be cautious and somewhat pessimistic.
Boy, it took me well over a week to read and digest 23 pages of this thread, but I am much encouraged. More than any other "fix" so far. The negative reports on all previous fixes has kept me from sending in my 523xxx for fear it would come back worse as so many have reported before. However, although the 1d3 has many major improvements over the 1d and 1d2 bodies I've had, focus accuracy isn't one of them.
Nice to hear your comments Susi, nice skateboarding shot. I still love the 135-f/2, although my current favorite is the 70-200 f/4 IS. All the positive reports and your impressions have convinced me to take the risk this time.

If you talk to techs here in Canada, they ALL say there is no hardware fix, just some software is updated in the camera.

Interesting. I haven't had a break to send it in for the fix, and will probably hold off a while longer.
After installing firmware 1.2.5, it did seem to need new MA settings. I'm trying to see if I can detect any "disagreement" between the focus achieved with various points. Aim one at target, AF, compare with live view, repeat. Aim a different one at the same target, AF, compare with LV, repeat. Not like the real world shooting I do with moving targets, but something with replicable results to compare. All the points seem similar. Doing the test with 85/1.2, slight differences do show up with each focus acquisition, but the errors are small, and again, the different points all seem to have about the same hit rate and the same maximum error.
If I have no accuracy problems with off-center AF sensors, and the new firmware hasn't caused any new problems, is there any reason to send the body in for the "fix"?
Ok, after testing I've come to the conclusion that it came back worse than it went in....
The overal AF performance may have improved, but they've managed to introduce a new problem that negates that completely.
Although previously the body required +12 MA for best results, they solved that. But it now looks like the outer left AF-point is front focusing compared to the others, there may even be a complete skewed effect from:
far left outer is ff - af is more off than on (in one test by more than a couple of meters)
center is ok - af is on
far right is bf a little - af is more on than off
In answer to my mail they replied that the modification might mess up the settings.
...If they know this, why don't they check this before sending the body back (time and money?!).
So they asked me to call them to make an apointment to send in my equipment (?)
To be honest if they mean my all lenses, I'm afraid it will get from bad to worse (I'd only dare to send in the lenses that I suspect to be a little off).
