I just got off the phone with Canon. According to them, all service centers can perform the AF check and repair but Virginia was staffed up to most efficiently handle the load. So they tried to funnel all the III's to them.
Only Virginia can do the Err-99.
Unfortunately, mine went to Irvine. I guess we'll see what happens.
That directly contradicts what one rep told me. She said NN was only ready to support the AF fix/adjustment (whatever) and that if I wanted the Err99 looked in to it had to go to Irvine or Jamesburg.
East coast is two days closer by UPS ground so I took Jamesburg, it arrived @ Canon this morning.
I don't want to spread inaccurate information... that is just what they told me. I didn't press the matter. We should account that my rep or your rep might not know exactly. Oh well.
I called yesterday about my Serial number. Received a e-mail today with shipping information. Just dropped it off at the UPS center to send it off. Odd though they are shipping these ground to VA. Everytime I have had something shipped from Canon they have done 2nd day. Either way its off to Canon to see what they do with it. For now I'll be shooting everything with my 1DsMKII.
Matt they probably have so many of the damn things coming in that they are afraid that UPS will be overwhelmed Called for my label for the MKIII just a bit ago and will send in tomorrow and the 1DsMKIII at a later date. I had just sent in the MKIII late Nov for a 2nd look at that damn mirror but never got a chance to test it outside. I can't wait to try the 300 2.8 on it and it seemed as though that lens gave me the most problems with soft focusing while on the MKIII.

Well that's just unfair because this is what they told me in the email.
"We are happy to repair this camera for you at no charge to you,
but Irvine is not able to accept this specific repair. Our Facility in
Newport News, VA is set up to handle all AF Accuracy issues that your
camera may have encountered. We apologize for any inconvenience this
causes you at this time. "
They've already sent me a UPS packing slip to VA.. I really wish I could just drop it off at Irvine, it's only 10 minutes away...

So, have any cameras returned from Irvine with paperwork stating specifically the AF adjustments had been done according to this latest recall?
Mine was in there for Error 99 when they announced it, and someone on the phone told me they would check the focus while it was there. But the service report just had the more generic statements about further electrical adjustments and parts replaced.
Maybe they're not even doing it there. Makes you wonder more now.
I've been using a D3 on loan from Nikon Professional Services this past week and I'm convinced something has to be wrong with the AF on a Mark III I've owned since September of 2008. It performed flawlessly until around the first of the year then alot of images are now soft or completely out of focus.
I talked to a Canon customer service representative a little while ago and a shipping label will arrive within two working days....maybe sooner when I told them that the D3 focuses perfectly under the same situations.
I have to send the D3 back to NPS on Monday but I'll use Mark II's until the III comes back since everything I shoot for awhile is with strobes or during daylight and the Mark II's have always done an excellent job in the past.
Hey Gene.... the Pelicans will be showing up in the next few weeks..... Just a heads up ...... And yes, I'm sending MkIII in..... if nothing else, just for a check up..... besides, I'm still on down time from my wifes surgery.

Hope she is doing well Ron.
I will ship mine out no later than this weekend. Hopefully it will be back and tip-top in a week for the pelicans. Otherwise I'll shoot them with the 400!

She's doing very well..Thanks
I'm going to ship mine off in the next couple of days. Got to find a box, and pack it up.... got the UPS label. Hope it get's back soon.... all I have as a backup is a 30D (I hate that thing) or my 10D (constant err99.... but when it shoots it's AWESOME)... I should slap the 500 on it and see what happens. Maybe the "bazooka" will freak it out enough that the err99s will go away

I stuck the Rush service sticker on it. Got a turn around in a week.
I finally gave my 10D and the original 28-135 starter to my son. Hard to let that thing go. It was still working great and could produce pretty darn good images, but god what a slug! I got great images with the 500 on the 10D though.

Yeah a little slow..... but all you needed was timing. It was faster than my D60.
