You wonder why it took this long to offer a fix if they had implemented it at the factory back in August?

See this : http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx

Body datecodes are very similar.

I took mine to Mississauga, they're telling me 15-20 business days?! I don't know what's up with that, as other people posted here saying less than a week? I definitely need my body back sooner than that. They're telling me they have to order parts from Japan first. Sounds really odd.

going by that it would be July 2008. I have had zero issues with mine so as of right now I will not be sending mine in or updating to the new firmware.

It would be silly to schedule repairs before they have the parts available. As to how long it takes and when you get your service done, maybe it depends on if you're a CPS member or not.

I'm not positive but it sounded to me that the rep believed the issue is somewhat related to the repair for the sub assembly that was performed. In other words it looks like when they repaired the sub assembly they caused tis other issue some how and it wasn't discovered until sometime after.

Mine was one of the first manufactured that did not need the sub assembly fix. It still needs this new AF fix.

From what they told me, they first order parts when the body is there for repair. Seems rather silly, though the staff there always comes across as clueless.

Chuck, if you pull out the battery and shine a torch inside the battery compartment, on the back near the battery contacts there should be a date code.

Alistair thanks for the tip. But I did mentioned the possibility of finding the manufacturing date in the battery compartment to the Canon Rep but she was not aware of any way to determine the date from anything on the camera. That is when she found out that Canon had just made the serial numbers available so she could tell me that my camera was manufactured after the August 2008 date and would not require the repair. If you have purchased a 1Ds3 or 1D3 after August 2008 I would call Canon and have them check out the serial number just to be certain. The Canon Rep wasn't sure if Canon would be releasing the list of serial numbers to the public or not. Hopefully they will and soon.

That would be an incredibly inefficient and indeed clueless way to operate. They must know from the web registration that they will have many cameras to service, so just order a batch of the parts and schedule the cameras. The cost of this will be carried by Canon so the service center has nothing to lose by doing this in an efficient way. Let's hope it wasn't the manager of the place you talked to.

Just a FYI. You can take it to Irvine (Carry In) but don't send it there unless you have a shipping label from them that is to Irvine. I was advised by the staff there that it was "supposed" to go to VA for this problem, but they would take care of it for me since I brought it in.

I live very close to the Irvine center.

I physically took mine (1DS) in on Weds and had it back yesterday with the "fix". I have NOT had a chance to test it yet to see if any improvement. I use the outer (upper) focus point all the time for vertical portrait shots and I usually get about a 60-70% keeper ratio using that point. Using center, I get about 90% so there was definitely a difference between the two. If the upper/side points can perform like the center point, I'll be very happy. BTW, I use all F2.8 or better lenses and 95% of the shots I take are in AI Servo.

I will post if there is any improvement after I get a chance to test it this weekend.

BTW, I purchased my 1DS MKIII in April of 2008, so it already had the sub-mirror fix pre-purchase, but needed this update. The paperwork says that "the focus of the outer AF points did not operate properly and that electrical adjustments were carried out on the part" ... whatever that means.

This is a quote from L33t "Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten... That should say enough."

This is pretty typical for large scale operations. The first few people that send in have a longer wait. Later, they have parts flowing in and things speed up. They order a part when your body comes in, but might not wait for that actual part to arrive to fix your body.

She might be just a phone operator....

Date of purchase is not as accurate as date of manufacture in this case.

PS: I remember someone here bought a 1D Mark III late 2008, and the camera was manufactured in 2007

Cheers

Got email to respond for collection, due to high demand they want to take my camera middle of next week.

Fine. Makes me want to get my Canon hat and jacket out of the closet again ...

Lide,

Thanks. Looks promissing.

I am very happy with mine, but like others have said, I think for resale value it needs to go in.
