p.1 #1 · Question re: 1DsMKII anomaly

Hello all. I just received another 1DsMKII body. I noticed at shutter speeds 1/1000+ I'm getting a light streak that runs at the top of the image. The faster the speed, the thicker the streak. Any ideas what's going on?

This one is 1/6400, f2, iso100, 135mm

Shutter failure. Will set you back on the order of $300.

Imminent shutter failure. I'm on the third shutter with my 1Ds2. The first two each failed with fewer than 10K actuations. The Mark II shutters have a high failure rate, based on personal and anecdotal experience. I'm kind of surprised a bigger deal hasn't been made about this. It's a great camera nonetheless.

The photographer who owned my 1Ds II before me had its shutter replaced at 30,000 clicks. The second shutter is performing great; lightening fast and quieter than my 1Ds Mark 1 shutter. Maybe the replacements have a longer, better life than the factory shutters.

Anyway, the banding sure looks like imminent shutter failure.

Thanks guys. Anyone know if Canon warranties the shutter once it's been replaced...I'd hate to be walking through a revolving $300 door!!

You know what?!?!? Mine is doing that exact same thing!!!! It's still under warranty so I'll just send it in when I get a chance. For what it's worth, it started happening after about 3 months and maybe 10K actuations for me. I've been cropping it out since it started. It definitely is related to shutter speed

To be a bit more analytical:

The image on the sensor is upside down and backward from what we see in life, in the viewfinder, and on the review screen.

The light streak at the "top" of the image is thus actually an over-exposure at the bottom of the sensor.

This suggests that the second curtain of the vertical-travel shutter may be either sticking on the way down, or is "bouncing" during the closing.

In other words, imminent shutter failure is likely.

...but you already knew that.

p.1 #10 · Question re: 1DsMKII anomaly

Do not keep using the camera or else the shutter may fail completely and scratch the sensor. Here in Oz it is $700 for a shutter replacement and $4,000 for a sensor replacement.

My 1Ds2 shutter started playing up at under 4k operations. It was replaced but the replacement was nearly as bad when I got it (so much for veroman's theory ) and it too was replaced. I haven't tested the newest one yet because they sent the camera to the wrong place but I'll get it next week.

An observation I have made is that the effect got worse with time and usage - fairly rapidly in fact - and as it got worse it also showed up at progressively slower shutter speeds. Initially it was only at 1/8000sec. In my case the defect showed up as a series of broad horizontal bands of darker than expected exposure and also a series of thin arc-shaped bands.

Personally I think that Canon warranties should cover a set number of operations even beyond the standard 12-month period. There's no way that two shutters rated for 200k operations should die at 4k and 0k. With those odds I ought to have won a fortune on lottery by now but it seems that I don't do good luck - just bad

I have heard that if your shutter fails well before the rated time, Canon will often replace it for free, even if the camera is out of warranty. I have had many people on this forum and POTN tell me that, when their shutter failed at, say, 30K clicks after 3 years or the like.

The shutter failed on my 1DMkII on it's first time out. Symptoms were the same as you have - streak of light across the top of the image. It was replaced FOC and has been fine ever since: 3+ years.
