I love my D2H. I have an unnatural connection to it. I should sell it and move on, but I just can't seem to do it...
sjms: Check the EXIF on that shot. It is really that high. Use facts when they are available man!
you missed the point. granted he has shot x amount of images. but i somehow feel there are considerably higher ones out there. these days its easy and cheap to hold the shutter release down.
p.3 #4 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count
Yes, I think I did miss your point I see it now. Regardless, his point about it being the original shutter + meter board still stands. And the fact is that on the original shutter and meter he has got this frame count. Which is pretty impressive. Perhaps he doesn't hold the "world record" as he would like to, but he's gotta be pretty close doncha think?

I appreciate how some of you bring the others around to my original point. Thank you, AviB.
The biggest knock on the D2H was the meter recall. As for blown shutters, every camera body has its shutter life expectancy, but I don't recall the D2H as being "notorious" for unexpected blown shutters. Aside from normal wear and tear on the camera body/chassis, I honestly never researched how long shutters in D2 bodies should last, nor D1 or D3 bodies for that matter.
1.28 millions actuations is something I've not heard of before, especially for a relatively early generation digital pro body. And for those who don't read entire bodies of content, I'm not talking film bodies, Canon bodies and anything else.
I am getting early signs of the shutter expiring, like pockets of dead (black) frames when I'm doing the machine gun routine, but I back it down and 2-3 frame bursts.
When I began this experiment of shooting til the damn thing dies (due to electronics failure, blown shutter, some other meltdown), I'm shooting this D2h, a second body D70s (because it synch flashes at 1/500), then keeping a D2Hs body on my TTank belt for backup.
I leave tomorrow to drive south for 10 days. I'm shooting four college basketball games (Memphis, Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma, Wisconsin), two NBA (Mavericks, Thunder), two days with Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, and half day at a high school state dance finals.
I fully expect the D2H to keep humming and I'll probably peel off another 10-15k click. I dunno. We'll see.
p.3 #7 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count
I sold my D2h recently... and it was over 80,000 clicks from a mere 3K when I got it. I used that camera for a good 3 years as my main camera, so I am not surprised that the shutter count was so high. I also used the 8fps quite a few times when required.
p.3 #8 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count
Well, just checked mine and it is at 42235. It was 25k and a something when I bought it about 14 months ago, so that's....hmmm....just over 40 shots a day. Disappointing, I need to pick up the pace
p.3 #9 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count
Really an amazing testament to an amazing camera body. I enjoyed my D2H, and I'm sure it's still firing away blissfully. I had no errors of any kinds, but then, compared to this it was just a baby!

p.3 #12 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count
It's entirely concievable, even Nikon gets lucky and maybe the constant use is the best thing for high numbers.
The D2H had a decent shutter setup, and when we did the surveys here on FM with complaints to Nikon the SONY end was the problem. BUT I think right now they might be more interested in the recovery of the 41.7 million from Circuitus City and Ritz. Rumors have it Nikon Japan might recall their CFO rep here in the states and offer him early retirement and a part time job at a respectable Sushi Bar in Tokyo on the graveyard shift.
Funny part about this whole thread is that the D2H with the Sony BOARD/CHIP of death was the most repaired Nikon in the pro series of all.
It was the board and chip setup, a trace left on the board defaulted the camera to whatever the lowest setting was of the lens. Nikon denied it for so long and after I threw forty pages of letters you guys wrote at them at the PMA finally admitted it and several months later issued the free recall regardless of whether it was under warrantee or not.
Thus I am really surprised still at these numbers without mention of the SONY gaf. Nikon immediatly came with the D2Hs within three months because of other problems and it was cheaper to start over, and it was a different model not just a number change. But the clue might be the D2H in question if I read correctly is used mostly in manual mode and even with the Sony problem it did work in manual.
I will say this, they were fast cameras and spots and action was it's best use with 2.8 higher end lenses.
My two went dead brand new within ten minutes of each other in a really hot hanger while the presidente El Loco Bushido was el spielling another smoke job. Old trusty D100 saved the day.

Well I certainly will be keeping mine till it dies. It's worth nothing on ebay today anyways. Hopefully that will be in the 500k region. At least. When it retires I'll keep it as a decorative piece next to the Praktika, the Voigtlander and the other cameras.

ajacobs2,
Thanks for the info, man. Good stuff. That's the type of info I've been looking for... historical data.
I take care of my gear very well so I thought nothing about shutter counts when I hit 300k, 500k, or 700k, but then I began thinking "when is this thing supposed to die?" I knew about the meter issue, but I never experienced that problem so I never sent it in, but I was already past the warranty period. That's when I began "the experiment", had to be almost two years ago. Don't send it in, no NPS servicing, let's see how far this baby can go. I shoot Manual mode 100% of the time, yes I still shot 7fps outside to catch cheerleading stunt sequences, or indoors for volleyball action.
Honestly though, I didn't know which was supposed to happen first...the shutter blowing or the meter tanking. I kept waiting and waiting, all the while keeping a backup body at-the-ready. Well, it hasn't happened yet.
This past football season, however, I finally saw signs of shutter issues. Consecutive black frames started happening during cold games, like rain and snow at Arrowhead, or 35 degrees at LSU, 40 degrees with wind blowing at Ball State.
So I just keep waiting...and piling up the actuations. Environmental conditions, like shooting indoors, are things I pay attention to these days. I leave today for nine days. I'm hoping the "count" continues.

I sold my D2X at 820,000 actuations 6 or 8 months ago and told the guy (a good friend) I would pay for the repairs is it broke in the next 200,000. I bet he's close to racking up an additional 50,000 by now - haven't checked though.
Still 820,000 is a LOT less than: "Camera Actuations: 1,283,240"
Correcting a mistake. I talked to my friend today and the camera (my old D2x) has 624,119 actuations on it right now so I guess it was 620K when I sold it to him and not 820K.
Oops, Sorry about that. The +200K personal guarantee I gave would make it 820K in all.

two thoughts... I am a low volume shooter for the most part and have more than 100k clicks on my D2H. There are a few reasons that you wont see many cameras with 1M clicks talked about: First, people that shoot that much dont generally have a lot of time to post on the internet! Second, the camera becomes a tool, not a piece of jewelry. By the time you have a million clicks, you probably dont care that much about how many clicks you have. Third, the cameras with that much use are sometimes owned by companies, not specific people. When you take camera #14 with you to a shoot and drop it off at the office later, shutter count doesnt matter. Fourth, people who take that many pictures generally make a good deal of money with the camera, and if they are camera enthusiasts enough to check shutter clicks, they are also probably buying better cameras over time.
no hits intended on the original poster, just observations from knowing high volume shooters and companies.

1.2 million shots on a D2H at 98% keepers?
"I'm purposely running this D2H into the ground just to see how far it can go."
This scenario reminds me of when I was just getting started in digital photography. I hungered for the gear that many pros took for granted while I struggled along with a string of P&S and prosumer cams. Instead of running that D2H into the ground why don't you give it to someone who will appreciate it more? Maybe a high school photography teacher or a local camera club could hook you up with a youngster that would be thrilled to have that six year old pro level technology. In case you feel you haven't gotten your money's worth out of it you could claim a tax deduction as a charitable donation.
15,000 shots of puppies in one day?
Somebody needs to tell this guy that you can make more than one print from a single digital file. How can you possibly take that many photos without having massive redundancy? And who has the time to process them all? Even with the fastest software simply going through them to see which are keepers would be a daunting task.

this guy shooting the puppies has made a Lot of money. You shoot in a commercial environment a lot of exposures to get the One that really comes together. in the digital world of photoshop some think everything can be fixed later. But if you figure That time in post then why not just shoot till you get it right in camera? shooting in this manner is fun , challenging, and in many ways saves time later on. when you get the one it just is so perfect that it rarely needs any post work at all. Different strokes

Well I'll certainly use my D2H till the moment the shutter pops out of the frame, the LCDs crack and smoke pours out of the hotshoe and viewfinder. It is my camera and I enjoy using it so I will keep using it till it dies. Who will appreciate it more than me that is using it so much as I really like it? I don't see why you have to be so negative about it and fail to see what it has to do with when you where starting photography.
