Thank you so much for your kind words and for the vote. I appreciate it!
For this i used my Canon 5D and a Canon 85 mm f / 1.8 prime lens. For key light, I used one of my new Alien Bee AB 800 strobes set up to bounce off the inside of a 45 inch umbrella. The fill was light reflected off a white reflector. There was a little bit of ambient light from some small lights on the wall behind but I don't think they had any particular effect when compared to the bright strobe. ISO 100 Aperture 3.5 and Shutter speed 1/160 sec. I hope that helps.
All the best,
Endre

The picture is so beautiful it took me only a second to vote for it. I am a newbie would appreciate to know what lense and what lighting kit was used.
Thanks, John. I'm glad you like it. I didn't set up the board for that shot but rather I set up my lights around an existing game that she was working on with another 8 year old.
I'm surprised this has shown up all these many years later for such extensive commentary. I first posted it somewhere early in 2009. It is nice to see an old photo of mine generating interest again.
All the best,
Endre

Next time please set up the chess board correctly.
White square on the right! The board is backwards.
Thanks for coming to my defense, although it has taken more than 5 years for the subject to be raised. I don't even remember what angle I thought to shoot from, being more concerned with setting up my (then) new (now old) studio lights for a shot.
All the best,
Endre

Maybe not...maybe she's just a spectator and the "players" are in their proper positions left and right off camera?
We can't know for sure judging by the picture as she is not reaching for nor touching any pieces...
Thank you so much, Norm! I'm delighted that you like it, even if it is a very old photo of mine. Eva is approaching 14 years old now and was just eight when this shot was taken.
All best wishes,
Endre
