Local camera rep asked me today if I wanted to be placed on the list for the new 1D Mark IV. I said "sure, why not". I thought he was messing with me. He then said that he had heard from the regional rep that a new one was imminent. Makes sense with Spring coming up and the KY Derby which has been dominated by Canon cameras until last year when most the lens you saw were Black.
Where you the first one on the list? Don't get me wrong, I think its coming and probably this spring, sometime... but it does seem as if your guy is a little premature.
If they just made the 5D with weatherproofing built in grip, it would be perfect for me. I hate the battery grips that Canon makes (plus the extra cost). Plus, every new camera needs a different grip. 5D needs one grip I don't understand why the new 5D Mark II has to have a different grip. Well I do understand........MORE MONEY FOR CANON!

I agree on the grip- they don't mate with the body well at the base and just out just a bit too much behind the camera body for my comfort. It'd be a lot nicer if it were flush with the back of the camera- simulating more of a 1d style feel.
I often wonder if Canon did some better marketing that they would find out that folks would prefer to pay maybe an extra $50 to $100 for a well-engineered grip that sculpted to the body better and increased the fps when attached.

What's Canon missing is a middle body between 5D Mark II and the 1D series.
the 5d series are supposed to be between 1D and 2/3 digit stuff!
The thinking goes like this: 1Ds/1D - 5D - xx/xxxD
What you mean, however - correct me if I'M wrong - is a 5D with "better" AF and a higher fps rate?
In that case, they wouldn't have much left in order not to make 1Ds series look reluctant -
In other words - if your statement is right ... a compromise would be getting out a 5k eur body and combing 5D2 and 1ds/1d specs into one - future will tell us more
Yes..exactly...no need to have like 45 AF points just 21 points will make people happy, and change the fps to 6 or 7 fps, drop the MP to 15. That will be superrrr..for me .

Canon will certainly wait until they can wipe out Nikon in more than one category for a Mk IV (no Mk IIIn they want to retire the Mk III and the implications at go with it).
This would mean more Mp than the D3. That's a 15/16Mp+ single sensor (with a full stop better hi ISO performance), more fps (11/12+). Or a FF sensor toggling to 1.3x crop (18Mp FF @ 8/9fps/11Mp 1.3x @12/14fps?). Plus the better LCD, maybe video, no MLU (some things never change) and a few other nice (Pro) features.
For this Canon needs a bigger, faster, cooler (on chip) buffer and a new sensor (based on what they know/learn with the 50D). I predict that prototypes will be sighted, before announcement, in the hands of worthies such as Rob G.-so that there are no "Mk III-like" problems.
Salesman asked for a sale. Received a yes. Manufacturer will eventually produce something and the money flows. Gotta love it. I like lining up my sales too. Win win but has nothing much to do with when big Red C actually makes this camera and gets it into mr JB's hands
Think I will wait until I know this one is perfect out of the box. MKIII has been working fine for me now and I love the low noise so I'll be in no hurry to buy a new body and I hope there's no video with it.
