I have a lot of flying to do in the near future and need to know if I can carry on a small tripod. Will TSA let my tripod through or will I have to try to jam it into an oversized envelope and mail it to myself? I am only taking the small camera and would be traveling with a Manfrotto 785B. which is only 17" when folded up. I travel light and don't really want to check a bag just for the tripod.
Thanks,
I've carried heavier legs than that, though I have heard that some airlines are more stringent than TSA. I wouldn't expect any issues, but check the airline's website to make sure that they don't have restrictions beyond the TSA ones.
took a Manfrotto 190PROXB strapped onto my Lowepro Nature Trekker II right through security and on board as my carry on with American Airlines - No worries.
I've taken a Gitzo 2 series and also a monopod onboard as carryons before and only once did I have an issue. It was on an international flight leaving Israel...they wanted to see the related photo gear and have my operate it, simple enough.
