In sharpness maybe, but for overall image WOW factor, the 135L is a far cry from the dreamy smooth background blur and subject pop. The 85L is a specialty lens one would buy for artistic effect, and not pixel peeping sharpness. Besides, if you want to talk sharpness, there's other lenses that would rival the 135L at lower price!

Go pick both of them up. Check out the hunk of glass the 85 has. It is a matter of the process of making the lens I would imagine.

Depends on what focal length you need/want.

The word 'rival' is irrelevant in a comparison like this as they are both top in their focal length.

what i read from the posts for 85f1.2L;people are complaining about getting the focus right, there are no complaints for the 135f2.0.
but from an artistic effect i understand that the 85f1.2L is the best..for now

Getting the focus right with the 85L isn't a fault with the lens, it's just difficult to nail focus at f/1.2 because the depth of field can be very shallow. I like the 85 indoors and 135 outdoors personally, they both have their strengths.

A 2-stop difference is a HUGE difference. If you haven't noticed it already, check out the price difference between a regular lens and fast lens e.g. 200/2.8L II vs 200/2L IS. FYI, the B&H price is $695 vs $4,850. Okay, so maybe the IS cost an extra $500 .... so take the IS off and the lens w/o IS will cost you about $4,350 .... or 6x the price .... or $3,655 MORE for a 1 f-stop difference! Come to think of it, the 85L is a real bargain compared to the f1.8 version .... especially when the Canon instant rebate runs.

+2.

I have both and they are tack sharp and IQ is the best I've seen from Canon. With that said, pick the focal length you need and be done with it.

last time I checked it was closer to 1.5 stops... still significant, but not 2.

The only real difference between these two lenses is the question "Which one makes you look the best?" when you hand your customer the bill.

The 85 is every bit as sharp, in my experience, and is "better" in many other ways. at least for my uses.

you can't shoot f/1.2 with the 135/2.0...of course the FLs are different for what you shoot...

Berkant may I point out that an 85L will frame like a 136mm on your 40D and will still be an f/1.2 albeit with less pleasant bokeh? On your 1D it'll frame at 85mm and have smoother bokeh if used at large apertures for the defocused background look that many like for portraiture. One new lens, two new toys?

They're both part of Canon's Holy Trinity for obvious reasons and I wouldn't part with either of them. The price is of relative importance. I can see an f/1.2 lens being more expensive than an f/2 lens and I think the 135L is a steal (like the 200 2.8).

Simple: buy what you need and can afford. If you need both, but can afford only one, then buy the other one later.

I own both lenses and find no fault with either. They both are tack sharp and have dreamy bokeh. If you can afford both, get 'em.
