p.1 #1 · Processional shutter speed..dark church

What is the minimum shutter speed for shooting the processional in a dark church.
Not dark like a tomb..it has some windows but I expect it to be a cloudy day.

They don't allow any flash photography, I don't want to blur the coming down the aisle shots. I have a d700 so can crank the ISO and a sharp f2.8 lens.

Just looking for a ball park figure.
Thanks

How fast are they walking, how steady are your hands, how long is the lens, how dark is the church......

If you can go there and do some test shots that would be best.

Slow, VR and pretty steady, 70-200 lens, darker than average but not a tomb.
Just looking for a ball park figure to work from.
Thanks

1/50th is as slow as I've found to be useable - note I didn't say reliable. 1/80 is pretty reliable. You can give a 1.8 lens a try of course, but your DOF is thin and if you're up front where they're walking at you, well, you may find every image to appear backfocused.

Even in churches where I was told no flash it was 'no flash during the ceremony' and the processional/recessional are not part of the ceremony. So says the everyone so far.

This is my exact experience as well. Keep in mind you'll need a faster shutter speed if you are off to the side then in front, as you'll have two motions to freeze (sideways panning and them walking). Perhaps it's my technique but I've always found I've needed 1/100th when off to the side, where I could get away with 1/50th at the front.
