p.1 #1 · canon 1ds mk iii or canon 5d mk ii

Probably this has been asked before but I will ask this again to get the best professional advice on this issue.I am trying to add a new body for my work and debating whether to get a used 1ds iii or new 5d mkii. I already have a canon 1ds ii and 1ds which I am thinking of selling. Please help in deciding this. I usually shoot landscape. Thanks

I would keep 1ds2 and get 5d2 to replace 1ds1. 5d2 is a handy vacation cam

I shoot a lot of landscape and have a 1ds2. I can't answer the question from experience with the new cameras, but I would pose the question do you usually shoot in the conditions that would require a 1 series body? If you're going light weight, or don't need the weather sealing, etc, the 5d2 seems like the way to go.

Most reviews seem to suggest IQ is quite similar to the 1ds3, and for all intensive purposes if you don't need the AF system or the build I would say save some cash. Certainly so if you have other 1ds bodies to fall back on, as mttran is suggesting you do.

Best,

Get the 5D2 and keep the two 1Dss. You won't get much for the 1Ds, so you may as well keep it, it's a classic. I would be using the 1Ds2 for most stuff, but the 5D2 would be the newer camera with some features that may be helpful at times.

For landscape the 5d2. Looking at the images between the 1dsmk3 and 5d2 there is very little difference. In fact I`m still not 100% sure but the 5d2 might( I say might) just have the edge but more testing would have to be done. In any case the image quality is superb.
Now without side by side test results (that I suppose I will have to do to satisfy my curiosity) my 24-105 seems to be a better lens on the 5d2. I haven`t set it up in the micro adjustments (don`t see the need at the moment) in the 5d2 but have set it up in the 1dsmk3 so maybe my adjustments in the mk3 are slightly out.
What I`m seeing using the 24-105 on the 5D2 is slightly better detail in distant tree branches and that was one of the main reasons I went to MF lenses on the mk3 so that is very interesting. Not a bad thing because I don`t hesitate to just stick the 24-105 on the 5d2 and travel light when required. Not really enough varied work done with the combo yet but it does appear to be a better match but we shall see.

I`d keep the 1dsmk2 and add the 5d2. The 1dsmk1 is a classic for sure( I still have mine) but if I`m honest mine isn`t getting used at the moment.

I shoot primarily landcapes with my 1Ds3, which I just sold and replaced with a 5D2. And of course the reason is weight. In fact tomorrow I'm going on a winter mountain backpacking trip, where I'll be climbing and carrying a 40lb pack for a couple days, so the lighter weight will be much appreciated. IQ between the two is imperceptible, as long as your subjects are static.

There has been lot of talks about limitations of fewer AF points on 5dmk2 do you think it affects the sharpness of the image considering that we use the same quality glass on both bodies?.

I think live view for critical focus checks will offset the lack of peripheral AF points if you decide to go with the 5DII, especially if you're primarily photographing static subjects.

To be honest, with static subjets or when just using the centre point AF with Canon AF lenses you can walk a bout using it hand held without live view and no problems. If the lenses are focussing on the button( check via micro adjust) the IQ is as good or better than most other eos cameras (maybe need a touch more sharpening due to image size and look that you want.)

As has been said on here before " don`t expect the images to look quite as sharp and detailed as the 5dmk1 when you view them at 100% on a big monitor"

Sharpness is not a function of the camera body. Focusing is, but just because a subject is in focus doesn't mean it is going to be sharp.

You want an inexpensive vacation cam, I would highly recommend a refurbished Canon XTi (10mp). I shot my wifes the other day at 1600 ISO and the noise was very little, the camera is lightweight (so it doesn't scare the ladies), and, well, its a Canon.

Well since Canon's own website says that the 5D mark II sensor has the best IQ of any camera they have ever made, for me that choice was very easy to make. Especially since its $5,000 cheaper.

I thought Canon only said the 5D Mk II was their ISO champ. I am not selling my 1Ds Mk III to replace it with a 5D Mk II-I value professional AF too much. But I did buy a 50D for utility and ultimate pixel density and found that the standard battery (checked out as OK by Irvine) lasted only 90 minutes behind a 300mm F2.8 (strain of IS?). I have since bought a dual battery grip and two batteries.
