I design albums completely in PS right now, how would Indesign make it better?
WORKFLOW!!!
InDesign is a desktop publishing/layout program, PhotoShop is an image manipulation program...
ID and PS are designed to work together just like all the Adobe programs, but ID is where you put it all together. It's workflow is designed to be the fastest and most efficient way of laying out a document. I would shoot myself if I had to lay things out in PS... I can't image the file size of the spreads, the amount of layers, the rasterized text (if you have any text), and the list can go on forever...
Look into ID, after spending the few hours or so to learn the basics you will be much better off than laying out albums in PS. It is a complex program if you go beyond the basics, but making an album won't do that.
I am so glad you asked this question. I need to figure the album thing out. I would use InDesign to lay it out - but I got a little confused when I began to look into companies to print the album.
My client is interested in a Flush mount album. First of all do you guys have a recommendation for that product?
When you lay it out in InDesign do you use spreads?
With spreads you can go across the middle seam- do you have a philosophy as to how many times you do this? I just wondered if you experienced album makers have come up with some learning curve on this. (certainly the photos that you have will effect this choice.)
Thanks I really appreciate it!

I design mine in PS. A lot of folks rave about Photojunction and I recently downloaded now that it's free, but haven't had time to play with it. InDesign is also popular (obviously from the responses here). There's a number of folks that like Fundy's album builder as well: http://www.fundysos.com/.
Indesign is great and so is (believe it or not) Gary Fong's album design plug in for Photoshop. It has some simple tools to help get the images in and make them fast with Photoshop. We use it exclusively and heard about it from our friend who is the master album designer, Keoni K from keonikphotography.com.
