p.1 #1 · 1D III owners - information?

I am considering the 1D III. I would like to hear from those who use this camera as their main body. Are you finding 10 mp enough? IQ quality? Any other info. would be appreciated! I shoot nature/wildlife mostly, and do some senior photography on the side. I print photos from small to 16" x 20" max.

Thanks!

In order to say whether 10Mp is enough, you have to tell us what you are shooting and what you are doing with the images.

I see from your website that you only print up to 18x24. 10Mp is generally plenty for that size.

Well you'd be getting less than 200DPI on a 20x16, so you'd need some pretty hefty interpolation, if you print that size a lot you might want to look at a 1DsII for the same (less?) money

I find my 1D MKI more than suitable under these circumstances 90% of the time so I'd have to say that the 1D3 would cover you, yes.

I print at 11.7 X 16.5 all the time without any problem, sometimes even with a little cropping.

I guess it depends upon your perspective and prior experience. If you are coming from a 35mm film background and you don't need medium format film resolution, then 10 MP is adequate. I've printed 16x20's from my MkIII that would not have looked as good from 35mm film.

If, however, you spend a lot of time around these gear forums and have expectations based upon the digital age, then your question becomes more difficult to answer. Few people back in the day truly needed medium format film, and it was thusly more of a niche, mostly pros. Today, few people truly 'need' more than 10 MP resolution in a DSLR, but expectations have changed. Many people who never print larger than 13x19" own 15 to 20 MP cameras, but don't fully exploit their advantages.

Image quality from the MkIII is exemplary, and other than my having been previously spoiled by the luminance noise characteristics of the original 1Ds, the 1D MkIII is second to none in the file quality department (assuming it focuses OK).

Cheers,

Jeff

I have a 20x30 sitting here that was taken with a 1DMIII and it is very nice.

No doubt... I've done a couple of shots from my 20D at that size and they weren't half bad. I go through ink too fast at that size, so I tend to print smaller most of the time now.

I have printed cropped photos from the 1DMKIIn at 20X30. I have some stunning 20x30 posters in my sons room from Monster truck shows. I could easily do 30x40 with no problems. Elco Color labs does the prints for me.

I have to laugh, I did 4 foot by 6 foot prints from a Canon 10d 6mp jpeg... I have prints 32x46 from my 1d MK2 8mp body. I own 2 1D MK3s and love them for all kinds of reasons even though I did get 1 bum unit that Canon had to fix.

To each their own, for some there will never be enough pixels and for others 5mp was all they ever needed.

The Mega Pixel thing is out of control.

Go take a picture and leave the pixels in the dust.
