Could use more work, but this is an image I've been playing with for awhile. While maybe not THIS image, I feel I could get something workable before they tear down the starbucks stand.
They closed this Starbucks in my town on December 31st 2008, and I had my camera with me at the mall, granted I only had my 70-200 with me since I was doing portraits, but I took the shot so I could remember to come back.
I like the idea behind it but the composition just doesn't work for me. As the Starbucks sign slopes down it leads my eye down it where it "drops" off the photo. If the sign was further left I think it would work better.

This is only my opinion but I hope it helps.

What I was asking was for ways to improve on it, for the return visit. This particular photo does nothing for me, but I wanted to get what I could when i was there, and then return with a "plan", do you understand what I mean? Comp-wise this sucks. Idea-wise, it's a start.
When I go back, I will try for it with better composition, but similar feel. The emptiness is something I want to capture with it.
Without knowing what the area is like its quite tough to say what to do. If there is quite a bit of space around it I would try to show that it stands alone. Apart from that what I said above still applies and I think that a shot similar to the one above would work from virtually the same place.
I really hope you don't think iw as being a smart ass or anything. I wasn't and if you think I was, I apologize for it.
I do this a lot with my photography. I take a picture, maybe not the exact one I want, but to give me an idea of what to go back and look for. For example, I play guitar. When I was younger I was always recording ideas, so I wouldn't forget them.
Like i said, I know this photo isn't a winner, but I think a better composition with similar processing could yield at the very least, a decent to look at photo
Don't worry. I tend to say what I think too much so I can come across fairly blunt. Think it is a great idea though and the selective colour works very nicely on it.
Would love to see what you can come up with if/when you return.
Chrono, yeah they opened it up fairly recently. 2 years maybe?
I went back for the return trip and they had the lights off! The photos are a little less exciting, and with that big ass pillar in the way, it was still hard to get a good angle, even with the 5D and 24-70.
Then security approached me. The guy was kind of nice, but I wanted to nicely tell him that there's really nothing that can be done. Starbucks is a large company or cooperation, and them closing one is serious news. Since it just happened 12/31/08, it's still recent and appealing news, and that the people who frequent public places forgo an amount of their right to privacy.
IN the end, he was nice and just asked that next time I speak to the management. We'll see where these new captures bring us. Then again, it may just be an idea that is never realized.
