p.1 #1 · LCD protection 5D2 problem

I fitted a sheet of the 3M clear protection film to the lcd as I have done on all my larger lcd camera displays. This is the first 920,000 pixel display I`ve had and I see vertical rainbow lines. Obviously it`s only on the display and doesn`t affect the images.

whilst waiting for the correct film kit for the 5D2 I just purchased a film for the 1dsmk3 which is the same size lcd ( it works fine on my 1dsmk3)but obviously the extra res has had some sort of effect. You could almost call it a sort of moire effect.
I put the film on dry because the last time I used a wet application I got marks that didn`t go away.
It`s not a biggy but does take the edge of what is otherwise a superb screen.

Anyone else ever seen this effect??

Dave

I've never seen the need to put a cover on a cover.

Isn't the cover on the 5d II scratch resistant?

All EOS digital SLRs are already outfitted with a protective layer over the actual LCD screen. Whenever you scratch or smudge the screen of the camera, it's not actually the screen that incurs the damage. It's just the protective layer. You can buy a replacement from a Canon service center for only a few dollars.

There's no sense in adding your own protective layer to protect the protective layer Canon installed in the camera. Especially since your layer will only make that excellent screen far more susceptible to glare.

There isn`t anything that is scratch resistant (maybe diamonds

Yeh! I know you can change the protective cover but I am a bit heavy on them. when I see an image situation I`m not(or don`t want to be) thinking about whether or not to be careful of the screen, I`m just more interested in getting the shot and on my photo vest there are (although there shouldn`t be) a number of things that can scratch the screen/cover and don`t run away with the idea that they are scratch resistant cos they aint. They don`t normally have any effect on viewing the image and finger and nose prints don`t show up as much.

Anyway, thanks for the lesson now can someone answer the question

Nothing changes in 2009, why when you ask a question on these forums do people have to try and shift you towards their own way of working?

Don`t panic, I just thought I`d reply in the American way for a change

On that note, what's with the vest? We seriously need to change that obsession. It puts all the weight on your shoulders and it makes you look all sexy and stuff. I'd recommend going with a harness so long as we're trying to change your way of thinking.

With regard to the rear LCD cover. Just order a few of the canon replacement screens and swap them out whenever I feel like it. It'll make it easier to see the screens.

You're mucking it up, Canon made their screen clearer and cleaner and you put a cheap piece of plastic on it.

from their website..

3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) monitor with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings for improved viewing and smudge protection.

a new anti-reflection and water-repellant coating provides a clearer and more smudge-resistant surface and a light sensor mounted below the screen enables automatic brightness adjustment in accordance with ambient light.

Ben

I have changed the covers in the past but in the early days they were quite hard to get off. Have they become easier?

No to the harness, My domke vests just look like a dark jacket till you get up close, I find the balance just right and having had one of my main saliva glands removed the large rear pocket is ideal for carrying my (British passion) small flask of tea

Thanks

I wish they were cheap, they cost more than the replacement covers

OK, you put a very expensive piece of plastic on their cheap plastic. With the changes they made to make the screen better, it still mucked it up. Maybe you need a more expensive piece of plastic?

In 6 years I've never scratched an LCD cover on any of my EOS DSLR's from the Rebel, 20D, 1DMK2, 1DMK2N, 1D3. I think it would take quite a bit of effort. And as they say, when it does occur you can replace the cover very cheaply.

Actually, I've had the same wristwatch for 10 years now. The crystal is some sort of sapphire material and there's nary a scratch or scuff on it despite a lot of abuse. What ever it is, I wish it were more prevalent.

As for those little plastic LCD protectors, it's the work of maybe a minute to swap one out and they're cheap and easy to obtain.

I've never even thought of trying to replace the actual canon piece - I just presumed they'd be ludicrously over priced and challenging to obtain. Who knew!

OK, this is the film I applied http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=1023056

I do have a mark on my 1dsmk2 cover (how did that happen? they supposed to be scratch free ) I also have a Canon replacement cover for it so I will change it today. No instructions so I`ll use a crow bar to lift it off or maybe a sucker?

I wonder how many photogs use the Nikon supplied protection? Now that does look naf.

Q.
Has anyone replaced the LCD cover on the 5D2?
Q.
Has anyone scratched or marked the 5D2 cover or any other late Eos cover
Q.
Any body else ever used such a film or am I the only one?
Q.
Any instructions anywhere?

Thanks and have a Happy New Year

I replaced the Canon cover on a 5D. I use one of those suckers from the hardware store that hold up coffee cups. You just put it over the cover and pull until you get a edges to come up. Then a little more rocking back and forth and it lifts completely off.

The cover was held on with a very narrow piece of double stick tape.

My old 5d has been through the ringer and has yet to show a scratch. The diminished image quality with the protectors on just aren't worth it to me. And yes, they do make scratch-resistant plastic. Of course you could take a sharp object directly to the surface and muck it up, but under general usage, you'll see very little scratching. I toss my eyeglasses everywhere, and they show no signs of abuse. As long as you're not dragging the camera on the ground, I think you'll be just fine.

I put a nice scratch on my 20D's LCD with my finger nail, trying to remove some bit of crap on it.

The 5D2 doesn't seem as easy to scratch but my experience on the 20D means I will be careful.

I had one of those protective LCD sheets. It cost $12 - it bubbled, a wasn't so clear. I threw it out within 5 minutes. I think packing tape is better, and cheaper.

It makes me think of putting a plastic cover over the windshield of my car in case of rock chips.
