What I don't understand is why they are making a 64 bit version of it, why not just make the whole thing 64 bit, the manufacturers have to write new drivers anyway.

how many companies do you know that want to spend tons of money to update there x32 computers? x64 is geared toward graphical professionals and gear heads such as myself. the idea behind x32/x64 windows 7 is to put it into as many pcs as possible.

Does anyone know where I can download it legally? Would love to try it again.
Hi all -- I thought this thread had been moved - but here goes
The RC1 (Release Candidate) will be available to the public sometime in May with an expiry of Mar 2010.
You can get some "unofficial builds" on the "well known nautical site" but I'm not sure you would trust doing your professional work on an "unofficially leaked build".
However to whet your appetite Photoshop CS4 64 bit version runs great on a 4GB laptop with T7250 dual processor. On a desktop with a QUAD Q9400 and 16 GB RAM it flies.
I'm not sure whether some 3rd party add ins are 64 bit capable yet -- doesn't matter you can use the 32 bit version as well on a 64 bit system or just use W7 32 bit version.

I guess my next big step will be windows 7 64bit on SSD disk
I think the jury is still out on ssd's (solid state disks) They have a finite number of disk writes and nobody is really willing to say what that number is yet.
Mine is running of 2 Seagates in RAID 0. If you are afraid of SSDs why not to try SAS which are the SCSI (pretty expensive though, but uber reliable). There are a few newer mobos from asus that support this option.
well, better hold off building a new computer then. Kyle, this must be good, cos I can't remember when you last had something nice to say about M$ :-) so this certainly must be something to look forward to.
I personally have had no problems with either Vista Ultimate x64 nor XP x64 and I still have a box with XP x32 running my old scsi scanner
I think the major problem has been that people have expected that their old computers will run a new OS. With a Mac you don't really have a choice, you want to upgrade, then you have to buy a new computer with an Intel Processor, and it seems that people were "fine" with that, given the performance promised with it.
The problem I see with the Windows side of things is that we have almost too much choice, and with choice comes responsibility, and that has been lacking from most windows users.
I think it will be exciting with a new OS, not that I need it

Yes, that's why Apple diehards kinda make me a little bit ill In many respects, Apple has become what everyone hated about M$ in the late 1990s. The difference is that Apple also makes some decent hardware whereas M$ was at the mercy of having to make their software work on some pretty crummy third party hardware.
Glad to hear windows 7 is living up tot he hype... I just hope it's released by the time my next computer upgrade is planned around this Fall. Meanwhile I'm sticking with XP and skipping Vista altogether.
it's too bad Apple and MS helped kill off much better stuff such as Amiga though
