Has anyone actually got one of these or even seen one ? It was supposedly to be available in December but I haven't heard anywhere actually having them?
I've been eyeing up a 5Dr but figure I should wait to see how the Trio QF8N works out.
I just received a Trio. I have been testing it with a 5d-R, and so far I am very happy with it. I'll be using it for a wedding in a couple of weeks. I should have more info about it on my blog in the next couple of days.
So Steve, would buy a Trio or a 5d-R first? I would like to use the ttl mode and setup ratios for different settings. I am thinking of getting the new Pocket Wizards so the freewire may not be an issue. I been looking at the Turbo Flashes here lately and as you I too power my speedlights with Quantum batteries so that isn't an issue. but being able to work seamlessly is an issue. I Follow David Ziser's lighting technique and would like to be able to have a controller and an off camera flash as the main wiht the on camera flash as the fill. But I already have 3 Canon Speedlights(550,580 &580m2) So I was gonna do th eon camera in ettl/manual mode and use th eqflash off camera. But the cost of the flash, and ttl connectors is expensive. I figure with the new PW Flex I can control everything from the hot shoe of the camera.
If you are looking at either a Trio or 5d-R for your off camera light to use with your Canon speedlites, there unfortunately is not an easy solution that I know of to use the off camera light in TTL mode. Here are a few of the possibilities I am familiar with:
Freewire System - you could velcro a FW9T to the top of your Canon flash with either a 5d-R with an FW7Q receiver or a Trio as your off camera light. This would work with the off camera light in manual mode. I believe this is what Ziser does. If you wanted TTL, you could add the D-adapter, but it would be a bunch of stuff hanging off your camera.
Radio Poppers - radio poppers do work with the 5d-R and the Qnexus. I've tried this, and it works well. This would let you use your Canon speedlites, and you could use manual or TTL. It starts to get pricey when you add up the cost of the poppers and the Qnexus, though.
Pocket Wizards - PW says they currently don't support triggering Quantum flashes, but that support may come in the future. It could work well to have a Trio off camera with a new PW wizard, but it's uncertain if this will eventually work with the new Pocket Wizards in a future update.
Buy Both - the price tag is steep, but the Trio and the 5d-R play very well together. If I had to choose just one to start, I would probably go with the 5d-R. It's more powerful and cheaper while still giving you room to grow the system. If you are working with an assistant or have easy access to the light, it's pretty quick and easy to change the manuals settings. You could always add TTL capabilities later.
Hope this helps. I'm relatively new to the Quantum system, but I am liking it.
The Trio is an excellent controller to either the T5/X5, its really dependent
on your needs, how much light you would like to output, is it for indoors or outdoors usage. The Trio puts out beautiful quality light just like the rest of the Qflash lineup. A T5dr would give you another whole stop in power, the X5dr will give you 2 more stops, so either one of these will work great on a stand, via wired or wireless, then when your ready, add the Trio to your system and you got a portable lighting studio to go. We've been doing quite abit of posting on it on DPR.
Good Luck,

Kevin,
I have just recently had a thread concerning whether to go from a 580 to a Qflash, vs a monolight.
Potability is a huge concern, but so is overall ergonomics and convenience. It started to look like the Qflash was bit of trouble to deal with, and I am looking at small monolights. The various Qflash options are also very hard for a noob to understand, including how to integrate a radio system with other lights.
If at all possible, could you post a quick reply on that other thread, with your thoughts?
Meantime, I will try to digest what has been posted here as well.
keep in mind the the power output of Trio is less than T5D-R. I guess the reason you're going for Trio because of the extra power? it is not that much compare to SB-900 or 580EX II

not that hard. What kind of set up you have in mind? i'll have picture illustrate for you on how to set up.
