NVidia 8600 GT based card ... it is a mid range card ... paid $170 over a year ago ... so I'm sure it is cheap now or replaced.
I think that Adobe has made the right decision on not supporting people that have not purchased the software ... it is a little harsh, but I don't think they really have any other sensible solution. Upgrade cost covers their new development and support.
Hey Bill, I totally understand the decision not to support people who have not purchased their program...or want to try to pirate it, BUT when I gave Adobe support my legal CS3 license info and they checked it out, you would think that that CS3 support info would get me a small bit of help on the upgrade which would earn the company a continued customer. At least I would think that. I think I am going to stick with my CS3 until they get the issue resolved. Thanks.
I had the same problem. Using Windows Update to update the drivers for my Nvidia GeForce 7600 took care of the problem for me. I can't fathom why it didn't work for you.
Interesting note... I loaded this on my desktop and had the same problem ... updated the video card driver GeForce 8800 GTS to the latest one and the problem was fixed. So I guess I know that it is definitely a driver issue with my laptop's GeForce Go 7900 GS card... will have to wait until Nvidia gets a new driver fix out on their website.
I have been having the same problem. I tried some of the things suggested in this thread, but nothing worked. I started poking around in my video settings and discovered something. I dropped my hardware acceleration down 1 level and my cursors in CS4 are whole again. If I put acceleration back up it will go back to what it was like before. I'm trying to leave it at -1 for a while so I can use Photoshop. Hopefully they will patch it soon and I won't have to "rig" it to work properly.
BTW: This only fixed the cursor issue. CS4 still performs like crap.

I had the same problem too in CS4 and this has been driving me crazy!...I have a crappy old NVidea 6150LE graphics card and after reading this I just now dropped the acceleration down one level and my cursors work normal now! Thanks a million!

Adobe are studiously ignoring the problem with their new Open GL system blaming the video card manufacturers eventhough it is their fault for the way they wrote the system, CS3 didn't have any problems with the same cards. Wouldn't count on those 'supported' cards not having issues either. On their support forums last time I read their people were saying they couldn't replicate the issue period eventhough many people have the issue. Easiest thing is just to switch off Open GL in the preferences. Suddenly redrawing stops being jerky, the brush tool works again, etc.
Hi Beni,
You have to understand that CS4 64 bit is an entirley different animal. This is reall a major upgrade, Mich more so than CS2 to CS3. It incorporates OpenGL to offer better performance to professionals. I'm running CS4 64 bit on a Windows machine (64 bit XP) with an Nvidia card. Its up to Nvidia to update thier drivers and its up to your operating system to support the drivers, not Adobe. I downloaded the latest drivers and had no success. I installed 64 bit Vista SP1 and all my problems went away, 64 bit Vista supports the old cards. CS4 SCREAMS!!!! It has cut my work time in at least!! There is nothing wrong with Adobe code.

I just downloaded a trial of CS4 ... considering an upgrade... BUT my brush is doing some strange things. As long as the brush is small in diameter it is in the regular form of "circle" but when I enlarge the brush the only image showing on my picture is a small arc ... about a 1/5th of the circle. What is going on? I have an abundance of RAM and video card memory. I would appreciate help from any of the Photoshop gurus out there.
Did you look at forums at the Adobe web site? I don't know if the exact same problem is discussed there, but I do remember some discussions about brush cursors not working as intended. If there is no solution for your problem, trying a different driver and turning off the OpenGL support on the Performance tab would be the first two things I would try.
Thanks a Lot onetrickdog. I have been having this problem since I upgraded to CS4 and had tried a lot of things that didn't work . Dropping the acceleration setting 1 level did fix my cursor.
I have been away from the forum for a while... but since I started this, I did want to report that dropping the acceleration setting one level to the left resolved my issue. I certainly appreciate the help and hope this helps others. Gonna spring with the extra bucks to buy CS4 now that this issue is fixed.
