Thanks Norm. This is a bit of an abstract, and was intended to be that. I tried a whole bunch of compositions, and this one in tight on the b flat (corrected!) key was my favorite.

Uh uh, that ebony is either an A sharp/B flat key or D sharp/E flat (unless you meant the sliver of C natural ivory on the right, which is equivalent to B sharp).
Sorry, we musicians are picky about this stuff, just like pixel-peepers about, ahem, "sharpness".
Hmm, my mistake on defining the key. You are quite correct, it is the A sharp/B flat key. I did not understand my son correctly when I asked him which key it was!
I like it a lot (the idea, the simplicity) but the black background on the upper left corner bothers me - I guess unfortunately there's no black key on a piano surrounded by 2 white keys on each side. I'd like to see this with a F sharp/G flat instead (to get the 2 white keys in the background).

will_fm, thanks for the input. I actually shot one that way, but you get the second black key in the foreground to the right instead. When I compared the two, side by side, I preferred this one more. To get it out of the picture you have to change the angle significantly, which messed up the lines I was trying for in a horizontal. I will have to play around with a vertical to see it I can achieve the isolation of a single black key and get the lines the way I want.
Funny, when I looked at this yesterday, I felt the same thing as Guillaume (will_fm). Today I notice that you've posted a new image, and it's much better. Good entry.

Cliff, I'm glad if the comments were useful to you, although as we say "la critique est facile, l'art est difficile" (critique is easy, art is difficult).
This being said, I like the 2nd entry more, but I kind of miss the "creaminess" of the black key in the first entry. The light on the black key in the 2nd entry seems a bit crude, which of course also has its advantages with much better definition (or as Steve pointed out: detail) - compared to the white part which is great. In other words the white is white, but the black is shades of black (which might be intentional). In any case a really nice pic, and very on-topic.
Interesting. The light source for version 2 was actually a large soft light source versus the point source used for the first image. I had intentionally left more shades of black to give three dimensionality. In hindsight, it could be a bit darker and still hold the effect. I tweaked it and re-uploaded the image. Thanks again.
