Even AF speed?

Thanks for the reply, Marc!

I understand that there are problems with the Conurus conversion of the 24-85 on the 5DII. The voltage for the lens drive on the 5DII may have been reduced and thus prevent the Contax 24-85 to focus automatically. The conversion works on the old 5Ds and the 1D bodies.

Any current comments on this will be appreciated.

From what I understand, there was a report of one 24-85 not working. Others examples of the converted lens apparently do work with the 5D Mkll. Conurus is investigating to see what the issue with that lens is, and if it might be a issue with other lenses. As it stands, I've just heard of the one lens not working.

My 24-85 N seems to be focussing accurately and at full speed on my 5D2.

How does the 24-85N work in cold weather? My 24-105 didn't autofocus when I was trying take pix of glaciers in Alaska. I say it was about -5*C or so. Didn't have any problem with my 70-200/4 IS.

Last Fri I was complaining to Canon service about it and the extreme vignetting at 24mm. Basically the answer they gave me was that I have to live it. I would have expected that kind of response for a consumer lens, but not for an expensive "pro" lens.

That vignetting can be completely undone in DPP and elsewhere. And the 5D MkII has a peripheral illumination correction that should automatically correct the vignetting before you even get to post processing. Even the distortion is pretty well corrected in DPP as I recall.

I tested both my 24-85N and 17-35N and can confirm they both work fine on the 5D Mk II a coworker just purchased.
Can also confirm that it works well on the 50D (although this lens just begs for full frame). So the one incident reported could have been an issue with just the 1 lens.

while the N mount is more convenient to use, the 28-85 is optically more pleasing above 35 mm......before that there are some issues......flare.....great 3D color effect though

I really don't agree.that the 28-85 is "optically more pleasing" above 35mm than the 24-85 N. While this is, at least as you described it, subjective, I have not found the 24-85N lacking in the ability to please relative to any of the Zeiss zooms at 50mm or 85 mm. And the N certainly has less flare (like you mention), less distortion, especially at the wide end, and is much more manageable in size, weight and function even before you get to issues around adapters and automatic control. Quite frankly, with the 24-85 N, I see no reason whatsoever to own the 28-85. The N does everything the older lens can do and do it more conveniently and for the most part, better.

Well, everyone has a lens that just seems to get parked on the camera body more often than any other. For now, it's my converted N 24/85. And contrary to most of my lenses, I do keep a UV protection filter on the front. This is rare beauty and one I plan to keep.

Rub it in!!! Mine is #89 in the queue at Conurus right now. Same position as it was last Sunday

Perhaps Santa will pick it up for me and drop it off here on his way down from North Pole.

I got my last converted N lens going up for sale shortly - the converted 17-35mm f2.8 N.

Sold the other converted (and native mount) N's when I made the move to Nikon. If I had decided to stick with Canon, those Zeiss N lenses would be the last to go.

Conurus is currently "closed" (i.e. not accepting new orders) until 9/15/2009.

yep... glad I managed to snag my 24/85 converted from an FM in Singapore.... Ive only used it on my 5D thus far but I prefer it to both copies of the 28-85 that I had... just a more pleasing and easy to use lens all around and it has all the zeiss image qualities that I know and love (colors, micro contrast).... its been glued on my camera ever since I got it since its just so good at getting out of the way unlike some of the manual focus/aperture lenses.

The Contax N 24-85 converted lived on my 5D and 5D II. I tried the Canon 24-70 but was not terribly pleased with it; I know many love this lens. Also it's quite big and heavy; the Contax is so amazingly light and short it is an absolute pleasure to use when travelling. I also tried 2 copies of the 24-105 and just was not happy; it's hard to put into words but I so much prefer the look of the pics from the Contax.

I agree that it's the best general use mid-zoom option for Canon. It's not as fast to focus as Canon lenses, but it's fast enough for me.

Although I have reluctantly sold this lens, should I in the future return to Canon, this will be the first lens I buy.

Now that you mentioned it, the 24-85 N does occasionally, not focus with my 5D2.
I thought it was a problem with the firmware.

Probably like 2-3 times if you shot for about 4-5hrs.
