Hi David,
I especially enjoyed your mini gallery you posted and have a question for you. I recently used my 1DsIII with a 24-105L lens for some night time shots in New Mexico. When I opened them up at 100% pixels, I noticed every one had numerous bright burned-out pixels, some were red, others blue, and still others white with a blue edge to them. When they appeared in the night sky they looked like possible stars, except the stars had trails to them. They also appeared on manmade earthbound objects as well. I would guess about 30-40 hot pixels on every frame. Have you noticed this with your set-up? I wonder if its a sensor issue or a lens+sensor issue, my guess is it is a sensor issue. Exposure times varied from about 18 sec to 256 sec at f4 and ISO 400. I haven't printed any yet to see if they show up!

David,

Photos are wonderful, I like the way you share your insight into your work. Definitely inspired to try this type of night photography out myself. I glad you had fun doing these too - Isn't that what it's all about ?

I havent tried very long exposures, but up to 30secs yields literally no hot pixels, maybe one or two but not 30-40 like you mention. I would say it could possibly be a sensor issue and worth sending the camera to Canon. Its not a great lens for shooting long exposures with as its soft as hell at f4. The 17-40 is much better at f5.6, if you can get a good copy.

For some reason the older the camera the more hot pixels you get. My 5D seems to exhibit quite a few of these on long exposures, many more than when I first bought it three years ago.

Ring Canon and ask, it cant hurt.

Just so enjoyable.... goose bumps

the last one with the car....phew

I know the rocks and Orion are the ones you seem most proud of but the last one.....has such ...common texture AND elegance..

thanks for sharing the images and even more so for sharing some of the technique.

Season's Greetings

Bob

I love the detail in these photos. 4 is my favorite. I don't understand how / why these pictures are so sharp with the shutter left open for 30 seconds? Can you explain?

I was looking at some of the pics on your site and they are jaw dropping! THanks for sharing!
