I finally got within a reasonable distance of one of our local Belted Kingfishers yesterday morning.
Wish I would have got out a little earlier in the morning as the light was really nice for a brief period.
These were taken handheld with the 1D MkII & 400/5.6L with 1.4X II extender.
Nice shots! I love Kingfishers, but my local one chooses to always sit on a power line which makes for not so nice shots! He also seems very camera shy!
JayT, she is sweet looking. Warm BG works well with the warm chest bars. I really like the last one best Perhaps you will have a frequent flyer companion here. Glad you got the opportunity.
Jay! You caught a Kingfisher! Doesn't happen often. Love the background on these, especially the last. She was soooooooo cooperative, lucky you. Nice work

Yeah... these gals are hard to get close to, always playing hard to get.
Looks like you still got some pretty good light Jay, beautiful BG's in 2 and 3... #2 is my favorite. Well done.

Kirk,
Thanks, I think I got lucky. She must have been mellowed out by the morning light. It was really quite special before I even arrived at the site and disappeared not long afterwards.

The little buggers are very hard to get close to, congratulations.

Thanks Tim. Yeah they usually bust out laughing at us if we even think about photographing them.
Maybe she was just intent on finding a meal and didn't the FM paparazzi.

Tim,
Thank you. Yeah its only happened to me one other time in the past three years.

Lovely backgrounds Jay! Kingfisher against fire. Well done and congrats on getting close enough.

TK,
Thanks. This was over at the east end of the west pond. She seemed to ignore some of the few joggers so I figured I might have a chance. I might have been able to sneak around one of the trees to get a closer position, but I saw those BG trees so it turned out to be a much better choice.

Karl,
Thanks, but I somehow doubt these opportunities come by too often.

Maggie,
Thank you. Must be the same one who posed for you. "If MaggieBee sent him he must be OK, but that's close enough young man!"

Really nice shots of a beautiful bird
Thanks Lars,
That they are, but I hope one day to get close enough to get really good feather detail. Seems like these and Cedar Waxwings are hard to capture a lot of detail in.
