p.1 #1 · Wall Relief

Dear Friends:

An older shot of a wall relief at the National Cathedral gardens in Washington D.C. This pretty much amounts to revisiting and playing with this shot to see what could come of it.

The original has quite a green patina and mossiness to it. Your thoughts greatly appreciated,

N

Certainly lends itself to a conversion. Nice image.

Man....that looks like the result of years of acid rain.

Usually "bas relief" like this (assuming it is modern, made with this cathedral) would have much more defined form on the figures/faces.

These look like bad acid rain has eroded the limestone (or whatever the base is made of) and left us with these.

Of course, this could also be a bas relief panel from the 1400s that has been planted in the NC.

Hey folks, thanks for the nice thoughts. It was indeed in quite a state of erosion Steady. It was out, so no particular shelter, the stone is soft and porous, and it sees plenty of water run through it. I like the greenish version, but I must admit I prefer this version.

Thanks again!

I wish had someting profound to say here, but it really comes down to me simply liking the gritty feel.
You mention revisiting and playing around with the shot. If I study this, I really can't think of anything I would change.

The interesting thing about the way this images is framed is how the single level of visible bricks almost seems as if they are coming down and crushing the central figure. Obviously there is a cross present, but standing back a bit I almost see a different image.

As always, great work Nacho.

Behzod, thanks for the kind feedback. You know, the figure in the middle (Jesus I expect) does seem like Atlas holding his burden. The other things that gave me the freckles when I was taking the shot were the crevices, and their alignment. The lines are just not straight, this soft stone "sags" in places and trying to align based on one seems to throw something else off!

Thanks again,

N
