Hi Lee,

I have a Nikon SB 28 that I use in manual mode that I like a lot. You could get one at KEH for $84. I think they are a good option. You might want to check out www.strobist.com which is a great site that demonstrates a wide range of things you can do with a simple flash in manual mode.
