I just picked up a Zuiko 24 f2.8 with a chipped adapter. It arrived Weds afternoon. I put it onto my camera, took a few test shots, turned everything off, put the camera away with the lens mounted. Yesterday morning, I got the camera out, turned it on, and the battery was completely drained.
I had the same experience a couple of months back with another anonymous adapter I got through a trade: the chip was draining my camera's battery.
Needless to say, I removed the chip from the new Zuiko adapter - battery drain is rarely a convenience. Then last night I mounted a Zeiss 18 f4 that also has a chipped adapter, left it on the camera overnight, and this morning, Voila! - the battery is NOT drained.
Do others with chipped Zuiko adapters experience this? Why don't the chips on my Zeiss lenses do the same thing?
Ditto on the happypagehk chipped adapters...and also those from big_is. I have several of each on my Zuikos, and never a problem with draining the battery. I'd get rid of the ones you have or, at a minimum, break the chip off and continue to use the adapters.
Actually, that was the third adapter I got from Big_Is, and it was the best. The first one had a destroyed chip, and I mean destroyed, and the second was machined wrong, so it would not mount to the EF body. But every time I left that one my 1Ds or 20D, I never had any sort of problem with the batteries draining. Sorry to hear about that one.
The best thing IMO about a chip isn't focus-confirm. That's practically just a gimmick since there is always a little leeway involved. The best thing is having FL and max-aperture in the EXIF data, and only a few chips do this. (though it is now becoming more common)
So, you will be very happy with an update. The best chips that are known to be 100% dependable are sold by HappypageHK. He must program them for you.
There is a new chip that can be programmed by the user, and also has a VERY cool new "shutter lockout" feature. It has been giving some people (including me) problems, but working for others. I think this is the only type we will be seeing in 6 months, hopefully with further improvements.
I know I won't miss the AF confirm, because I have the AF confirm light turned off on my camera anyway. I found it inaccurate with alt gears, and the majority of my shooting is done with alt gears these days. The two Canon lenses I still have are long teles, and I learned to trust the AF on them a long time ago.
I don't mind not having/removing the chip. I don't think I ever got a happypage adapter, and I can't remember if the Hoada Fu on one of my Zeiss lenses has a chip or not. The only thing useful to me in the EXIF data was the recorded date of the shot -
Man...this just happened to adapter from big_is.
He sent me four different adapter for different lenses, but one of them, Leica 180/2.8, dis not work. And I left the lens on the camera, and the battery was drained.
I e-mailed him about this. let's see what happens.
The pattern I'm seeing here is the combo of big_is adapters and 1-series bodies. It doesn't sound ike the adapter always drains the battery (my seller had no problems on his 1-series body), but it sounds like something to be on the lookout for.
Just me, I'm going completely chipless from here on out -
Friday I'm shooting with the Oly 24 f2.8 on the big_is adapter (formerly chipped, now unchipped) on my 20D. Take a shot, can't take a second one. The battery is drained. No big deal, I haven't swapped out the BP-511 for a while. Slap the replacement in, put the drained battery into the charger.
Take a shot. Can't take a second, the battery is drained. Seems strange, but I don't worry, there's no chip on the adapter. Let both batteries recharge fully.
Saturday I get exactly the same result. One shot, battery drained. I swap batteries and adapters, pulling a Fotodiox consumer adapter from another lens.
Problem solved. Issue isolated to the big_is adapter, which drains the batteries on my camera bodies. I think the big_is is going to live at the very bottom of that big, deep kit bag in the sky.
I'm curious, though, as to why/how an adapter could drain the battery. Somehow, this adapter is in contact with the camera electronics, which cannot be a good thing. Is there a repair for this? Do others experience this? I'm also curious because the seller of this adapter had no problems with it, and he had the same two Canon bodies I have.
BTW, I am sticking with Fotodiox full-time from here on out with my Oly gears -
I've asked them, Big_is, and the reason they gave was that the adapter should match the camera.
For instance, the adapter I was having problem was made for EOS camera, but not for 1Ds series.
All other adapters I got were for 1Ds series, and they work fine.
Evidently, they sent the adapter I was having problem for cropped camera.

This seems like the right place to tack this on.
