p.2 #4 · Fulltime/Partime?

Part time, wife and I work full-time. Goal is to make photography my primary income in about 1.5yrs. Dream is that I make enough that my wife (a teacher) can stay at home with the kid(s). Other possibility is that we make a studio of our home and I can stay home while she goes to work.

your FT gig pays too much..at 35 weddings a year with 5-10 portraits a week (260-520 a year), plus graphics work....that to me sounds like GOOD money...

Part-Time Photographer, Full-Time Fireman/Paramedic. My plan is to build my photography business slowly, so that it replaces the need to work overtime and eventually be a full-time gig once I retire. Until then, I enjoy the journey!!!!!!!!

Some weeks are full time, some are part time But that's exactly the way I want it. I have a long term plan to build a large portfolio of landscape photography for publication and gallery display, but this will take years. So during downtime between commercial work and weddings etc, I travel to photograph beautiful places.

I'm a full-timer. I freelance for local pubs and do editorial, fashion, weddings, portraits and seniors of course. Biz has declined a bit lately and it's understandable with the economy the way it is. Just have to work harder and push the bar.

By the way off the subject here in case everyone didn't know... Evan Baines is a STUD!!!

i get 4 hours of sleep every night monday-thursday and a 30 minute nap mid day then fridays i get 6-8 hours sleep so i am well rested for the saturday wedding. saturday i get another 8 hours so i can spend time with the family sunday and then work all night editing.

4 hours is enough for me. my day job requires no energy since there is enough of it there anyways.
Paparazzinick, do you sleep?

You've got it backwards IMO. Make your free time before you have kids, then get to work when you've got somebody besides yourself to work for...

p.2 #14 · Fulltime/Partime?

Full time for about 4 years now, starting from scratch and working hard at learning as I go.

This year i''ve got enough business to draw a salary, but I keep reinvesting in the business as I go. Yes, I have a spouse with a full time job and benefits. I was in theory going to be a stay at home dad and just do a few weddings a year until our youngest get to first grade (2 more years yet) then go into this hot and heavy.

Problem is I can't say no when there's money involved.

Since we started with a gear list and no one has seen fit to list their's, I'll say that I started with a rebel 300 and sigma/tamron lenses. I soon learned gear matters.

40D x3
28 1.8
50 1.2
85 1.8
135 2.8SF
10-22 EFS
17-55 IS EFS
24-70 L
70-200 2.8 IS L
70-200 F4 L
Lensbaby 3G
580-2, 550, metz 54

Full studio currently being expanded (painting part way done and should be reasy to shoot by saturday and completely open again be the end of next week)
7 strobes, PWs, rolling stands, Scene Machine (new item), muslins, and furniture and all that fun stuff.

Up till this year it was 85-90% weddings for revenue. This year weddings are only 55% of my revenue with large growth in seniors, babies/children, sports T&I and am now getting more family ports.

Full time teacher (I.T.) and part-time minister. I shoot school activities and some church activities. I probably shoot 12,000 to 15,000 shots a year in sports and activities. I would love to make photography a part-time income where it would at least pay for the equipment that I would like to own.

Full time graphic designer, part time photography. I get great benefits with the graphic design but my heart is in photography- extremely hard decision to have to make as to which I want to pursue.

mcarr,

My wife works as a home care nurse admin. W/o her income and benefits, life would be much different. As a side note, she is now working out of the home upstairs. My office is down. It is an adjustment.

Also, happy to see we are "playing nice" on this topic. Room for full & w/e warriors.

That's a horrid plan! Kids need parents at home as much as possible... not out working their tails off just so the latest toys can be bought. That's why we've got such a rotten generation growing up now... absentee parenting.
