p.1 #1 · Canon 50D Opinions

I am wondering what the PRO members think about the new 15MP Canon 50D camera? seems like a pretty good choice to me but are there any obvious shortcomings to this Rig? and also what is thought of the sensor type and size.

Thanks
Kal

For the same amount (in my country) you can buy a used 1D MK II. Maybe not a winner on the noise compared to a 50D, but on all the other things better. Bigger viewfinder, faster and better AF, faster frame rate. Shallower DOF due true the bigger sensor.

I'm currently shooting with a 1D MKII because my MK III is gone for repair. It is my first real experience with a MK II and I'm thinking off selling my 30D and buy a MK II for back up. 'am looking for a back up, and a 50D or 40D was an option. Was, since I've used the MK II

I think fotojeroen has made an excellent point. A used, well cared for Mark II, or Mark IIN is worlds ahead of a new 50D in many ways. I recently faced the same decision, and decided to jump into the 1D series of cameras. I don't regret my choice at all. The 1D's are expensive enough that most people that have owned them have taken pretty good care of them. The 1D's are very robustly built and well sealed. They're probably worth taking a look at as they could be a viable option for you.

And, have you decided what's it going to be?

Good sensor, but there are features that I really appreciate on a 1D-series that the consumer cameras will never have.

More AF points
Faster/more accurate AF
Weather sealing
Ergonomics are better (maybe just a habit)

It depends on the kind of work that you do.

When the Canon 1DsII first came out I bought one. I also had a Canon 20D that came out at about the same time. The 20D image quality was almost exactly the same as the 1DsII, with fewer pixels though of course.

I loved the 1Ds2, but for studio/fashion and location work the 20D was all I really needed. I have a 40D now. I am going to buy a 5D2 soon, I expect to keep that for quite a while.

Personally, I would go for the improved image quality of the 50D, and the newer features like the expanded highlight range and live view, over the 1D build. Unless you do a lot of sports or other fast paced activity.

Best,
Michael

I have a 30D, 20D & the original 300D, bought a 50D about a month ago, not really for the "upgrade" but I needed the higher ISO performance than the 30D could offer, combined with a great burst rate (I shoot dog agility indoors & youth sports indoors) ... combined with my f/2.8L glass ... I LOVE THIS CAMERA, have had no issues with it, have shot school plays & fashion shows in virtually no light & still have printable images with minimal noise (use the NR software in camera and with CS3 only)

I liked the camera when I looked at it, but I became a little concerned when I read several reviews indicating that Noise appears after 1600 ISO, And the reviews also stated that even with 15 MP's the image quality was not much better than some lower MP cameras such as the 12MP NIKON D300. But i think it always pays to hear what actual owners have to say!

Thanks
Kal
