Only ever seem to have my daughter around, not that it's a bad thing , but sorry for the same subject matter, hope you enjoy, C&C welcome.
Thanks,
Alan
Hi Alan, those are really really nice pics. I love #1 and the look in #2 is sweet. If you don't mind me asking how do you achieve that "style" of shot?
My comments or suggestions below are not a criticism of you, your model, your talent or skill. I offer them in a friendly tone of voice and with the sole intent to help you with a second POV and set of eyes. If you read sincere questions and simple suggestions as "criticism" of you, then you will miss how I am trying to help you.
Of course this may be your own "style" or your own "vision" and I suppose we can assume that the images look just like they do because that is exactly how you like them. That is OK too. It just shows that there are differences of "opinion" on what looks good. IF these are exactly what you want and like, then by all means continue making your images look like that and have fun doing it. As I always say: "Follow your own muse."
#1 image is very nice. refreshing to see here on FM.
#2 image?
Nice expression. Too bad about the flare. I think the image would be nicer without it.
ShaneMD: thanks, it's just a warm/blue split tone in lightroom, but rather than figure that out for myself I'm just using FMer Spencer's (sboerup) LR Presets, Presetopia.
Steady: Thanks, yeah flare was intentional, not quite how I wanted but where I was going, definitely a personal preference. I always appreciate yours or anyones comments, sorry you need such a long 'disclaimer' these days Feel free to say whatever you want about anything I ever post, can only make me better, and I need the help...
Great shots and cute subject. #1 is my favourite of the two. I'm with Steady, I think #2 would be much better without the flare. But I'm also an anti-flare type guy. Not always but most of the time. It's just not my thing but I know it's the in-thing right now so don't listen to me. Haha.
I also tend to use my daughter or son as my test subjects all the time because I don't have anyone else. It doesn't bother me so hopefully it doesn't bother anyone else. Just keep taking beautiful pictures and that's what people will remember. Not whether your last 3 posts were of the same subject. At least that's my view on it.
that sucks that steady needs a disclaimer. i thought he was going to rip apart the pictures. but the comments made it obious that he always posts this.
very cute pictures, i especially like the first one. it captures the moment very well.
alan, please dont ever feel sorry for having the same subject matter! the eye of the photographer is never tired of beauty! take lots of images of your little girl. Parents are the most privileged to have the best subjects. thanks for posting.
James
Since the "flare was intentional" in your own words...
I am curious to hear from you what you thought it would "add" to quality of the image.
This is a sincere question.
I will find it interesting to understand how the photographer (any) sees the "flare" as an important element or part of the picture and how it adds to the picture on any level (quality, clarity, depth, etc.).
Care to share your thoughts?
NOTE: All of the above is written in a friendly tone of voice to stimulate discussion.
The thought process was two fold, one, hey look she's standing still and that's nice light, and two, maybe I can try to get some flare there, that's all. Hadn't given it much other thought as we were running to the car, late for dinner.
I don't really have a style right now, I'm just learning, and trying to imitate other styles I see to get an idea of the things I like, so honestly I don't know. It's a look these days, open an Urban Outfitters catalog etc. What does it add, I couldn't tell you. The look in my picture is average, to below average in execution, in my opinion. Is it timeless, probably not, will the pictures look dated, maybe, but I have tons of pictures of various styles so I don't mind experimenting.
Sure it may be a gimmick, but I don't mind playing pop songs on the piano now and then either...Doesn't make the Gershwin sound any worse, just a different song...
One thing I did learn is that giving my daughter peppermint candy is an easy way to get her to smile!
