p.1 #1 · photoshop collage help!

Hi guys,

I'm looking to see if there's a tuturial online that will help me make a simple PS collage consisting of three photos. Basically, I want to have a simple white background/canvas and have three photos side-by side-by side. Sounds very simple, but I have no idea to how to do it. My PS skill consists of touching up photos and I cannot do anything creative.

I want to achieve something like this:

If you can give me any 'dumbed down' steps here, that would also be much appreciated.

I've been scouring the web and the search function here, but did not find exactly what i want.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers

What size will the frame be that holds these three photos?

Well this really couldn't be simpler actually.

If you open ALL 3 images you want to use and crop them to the desired sizes and then think about the size of the matte you want to use.

With this in mind you Click on File then New and in the pop up window select the size you want for the matte.

Once this is done you should have 4 open image windows in your Photoshop.

Select each of your images in turn by using Ctrl+A and then Edit - Copy and then go to your New Matte and Paste with Ctrl+V this will create an new layer automatically, repeat with each of the other's.

Once your finished wiyth your arrangement save the PSD and then save as a JPG for the forums. Close the PSD and ALL other's and then reopen the JPG then click ALT+CTRL+I and enter the reduced size for a forum post like 1024 X 600 say.

Thats it really .

I can talk you through it or even do an online tutorial controlling your PC so you can see in real time how things are done.

Maurie.

Maurie,
Thank you so much for making a frustrating situation into a great one. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I was able to do what I wanted in about 10minutes!

Here is what I came up with:

http://i.pbase.com/o2/06/471306/1/106458282.2fUSV99O.collage2web.jpg

Now I just need to make my frames look more professional. I need to make a logo as well.

Any tips on how I can evenly space out the photos using a more exact technique? I basically eye-balled it. I 'm sure i can somehow type in numbers to evenly space it out on my matte/canvas.

Again, thank you for your eagerness to help. Appreciated.

Cheers.

Yes mate you can turn the ruler's on which show a scale on the edge of the image box.

There is a very intuative tool called smart guides inbuilt in Photoshop.

Open your PSD with all your layers I am hoping you have a master file with each image on a separate layer, Now go to the menu at the top and click on "View" - then slide down and select "Show" - an additional window should show allowing you to select "Smart Guides"
This will do what you seek I believe.
When finished adjusting Save the PSD and then save as a JPG for the Forum, close the images and then reopen the JPG and resize it , your done.

Example Below (sorry I should have asked first)

Variant 1

Variant 2

Is this what you hoping to achieve.

Thanks!
Yes, those are the types of frames I'd like to make.

Unfortunately, I am running CS1 and I dont think they have 'smart guides'. I tried what you said above by clicking view>show>smart guide (my cs1 only has a 'guide' option, not 'smart guide'). I cant select the 'guide' option either from the sequence you mentioned as it is greyed out. Any suggestions as to why?

I'd have to recheck but the smart guides worked in my early version of CS I'll have to reload the old HD and look.
