I usually find f8 enough for birds in flight. I would tend to try to use just my 400 without the TC for BIF, but thats just me - its way quicker to acquire focus. If using just the 400, I like f/5.6 to f/8.

Keep the shutter speed at 1/500 at a minimum and it is much better at 1/1000th or higher. Focus on the general area and dial in the ISO to achieve the shutter speed.

If your new at it, use AV mode and learn how to dial in exposure comp. If your good with the settings, use M. If using AV, remember that you will usually be 0 for exposure comp the trees in the background and +2/3 to +2 or more for birds in a bright ski.

Practice, practice and then more practice.

Glad I could help out. Good first shot.

A couple of other things you may want to consider:
1. Shoot in AI Servo for everything.
2. Set the camera to spot meter.
3. Use the custom functions to expand the spot meter to 7 or 13 points.
4. Read up on the custom functions, you may want to set them up....sports illistrated had a list of how they set there Mark II up, try googling it.
