p.1 #1 · Printing your own Album's

Does anyone do it here?
something like an Epson 3300 or equivalent pigment/long life printer?
What sort of album would you use? A slip in?
Do you spray?

I always like the idea of printing my own, then after a period of investigation I give up.

So if you do and are succesful can you please share your thoughts.
Of if you gave up in dispair please advise.

thanks

Yes, the top end album is printed here and the prices start at $3500 and top out at around $7k.

Printed here and bound at a custom bindery.

Other than that the more economical and easier options is printing outside.

i use to do my own albums when i did old school albums a while back.

the only albums we do our selves now are the albums from renaissance http://www.renaissancealbums.com/www/product/photogallery/selfmountgalleriagallery.htm but we only do maybe 5 a year out of the 30-40 weddings we do. most people dont like these because they want a custom design but we do a few traditional brides who love these.

Now when I do infant and senior portraits we do an album and print the entire think in a self mount album from renaissance http://www.renaissancealbums.com/www/product/photogallery/venturaalbumgallery.htm

we used an hp 9180 for a while and then switched to an epson 7900. we also do a lot of large printing in house. nothing below 8x10. 8x10 an smaller gets sent out. not worth my time or money.

the key to doing the in house printing and to handle each print with cotton gloves to prevent fingerprints and smudges before it completely dries. let everything dry for 24-48 hours before mounting in an album. we have been going back and fourth with spraying. with the newer epson printer we feel we dont need to but we will if a customer requests it. we do mention it so they do have a choice.

good luck.

I print mine on an R1800. I have a 4000 as well but the print quality is better on the R1800, and they are both pigment based so long life on Epson paper. I use Clearshield if I'm going to mount prints without frames but for an album I think it's overkill, since the book will be closed most of the time. Sending prints out to a lab just isn't an option when you're charging people thousands of dollars for an album, they need to be perfect. There's also the issue of mounting the prints and in a couple of cases I've buggered it up and had to redo prints which is easy if you're doing it yourself, not so if you have to send out.
