p.1 #1 · D300+200-400f4 and action shots...

Hello,
I had the opportunity to cover a Harvard vs. Yale JV football game yesterday. I had my D3 with my 70-200 2.8 and I used a friends D300 with my 200-400f4 VR to maximize the reach on tele. The D300 +200-400 combo performed very well. Very sharp and focus was fine in the good light. However, I have decided to sell the 200-400 (listed today on FM) because I really don't use it that much and for action I prefer the primes and need the 2.8 speed for low light. I may try and pick up a 200 2.0 once the 200-400 is sold. Here are some shots for those who are interested in the 200-400f4 matched up with the D300. Thanks for looking.
Jack

Very nice... more please!

While the 200-400 is by all accounts an excellent lens, I'm with you in believing I prefer the primes too for the f2.8 subject isolation and top low-light speed.

Still - images like these do make you consider the real versatility in a zoom with top IQ like the 200-400.

Love that last shot, Jack. It'd be great if we could keep 'em all, eh?! The 200 f2 VR is flat out obscene!!

are you really SURE that you need one additional f stop that badly? Looking at the photos I would think that the 200-400 tube is perfect for what you are doing.

The bokeh's different on the f4 glass....it's more than just the stop I'm afraid.

Hello,
" The bokeh's different on the f4 glass....it's more than just the stop I'm afraid. " Thank you TrenchMonkey. Couldn't have said it any better than that. For me it's a combo of not using the 200-400 that much, moving away from action and more into event and portrait work and bokeh. The primes give you that 3D look that you just can't get at F4. That being said for good light the 200-400f4 is tack sharp and versatile so if any one is interested in a basically new lens let me know.
Thanks for the comments.

Well my 200-400f4 is sold. I had some one see my post here on FM yesterday and he was at my house this morning with a check. Now what to do? 14-24, 200 2.0., wait and see what Nikon's announcement is on Dec 1st? I've got some thinking to do. Thanks for the comments.
