p.1 #1 · Dark prints

My Canon i9900 prints all pictures dark whether from DPP, Lightroom 2, or CS3. I have tried all the solutions I can find in color management. I then pulled out my old HP 952C and prints match the screen. Any help would be apreciated.

If you get an answer I'd be interested in hearing it. I have been printing digital for 7 years and the last 3.5 years have printed close to 20,000 images. I've used Epson 9600 printers, and now the Canon iPF8000's and iPF8100. Almost every single print has required adjustments or they print too dark. I've got EIZO monitors calibrated and profiled and have had custom profiles built for all printers. No matter what I have done (or tried), including having some very knowledgable printing experts review my workflows and setup.... but still no luck.

Do you turn the lights off when you process? And then check the prints under appropriate lighting conditions? In processing for a print I find it helps to turn off all the lights, and then check that your 'whites' are actually white - ie. at the edge of losing detail (just paint a blob of 'pure white' next to your whites and compare), and same with the blacks. That way you'll know your print will span the entire DR it can, if that's what you're trying to do. If your workflow is right, it might just be that you're not compensating for the backlit nature of the monitor, which tends to make things look brighter than a front lit piece of paper, so it takes some getting used to. White looks very bright on a monitor, so you might just be holding back. Just a thought..

All that is of course assuming good calibration, profiles, using all the right settings etc. But I have never had issues with getting prints look spot on for the epson 4800 and 7880 (that's all I've tried).

What Luminance value is your monitor set to?

Do you soft proof to your paper/printer type before you print?
