p.1 #1 · Help me decide what to do on new camera: | |
I'm at a crossroads, I hadn't done much shooting lately, and I think the largest reason is I've been really bummed about the results I've been getting.
I have a 20D, 17-55 IS F2.8, 70-200 F4IS (ok, I'm not dissapointed with that one ), and nifty fifty.
I have a full studio lights setup, but I hadn't really had time to break it out (its even in loan to a friend so at least its getting used), so I just carry the camera around and shoot what catches my eye. I love shooting cars, people, and landscapes. Urban photography has started to pick up interest for me, and also night work. Every year I go to a few Auto racing events, though I usually rent gear for those.
Right now my dissapointments are with high ISO performance of the 20D, and focusing issues. Every 3rd frame or so I seem to get a shot that's just way off in focus, particularly on my 17-55. I've sent both in and gotten them back and the pair still won't behave in my hands.
For the Rolex24, I've rented a 1dmk3 and 300 F2.8 this last year, and the photos I took are remarkable. They're by far the best looking and easiest to shoot that I've shot. Even with other lenses mounted on the 1D, it was just such a pleasure to shoot. However, its just a hair out of my reach (or maybe not if I really pursue it) at the moment.
The two camera's I've been considering are either a 1dmk2, or the new fantastic 5dmk2. I know the latter is more expensive, slow, and the AF system has already been buried by you guys; but the camera itself seems amazing in IQ, ISO performance and the video aspect really has some interest to me. Ideally, I'd own both it and the 1dmk3, but I haven't figured out how to make money with photography, or at least not enough to support itself as a hobby.
So where do I go?
I thought spend nothing and improve my own eyes and artistic talents, but I read and look at photos all day, and just feel that I really am limited by gear that I've gotten a great 3+ years out of.
I could buy a used 1dmk2 today. I am not sure how it compares besides being ~8.2mp and 1.3x, same rough age as the 20d and maybe slightly more poor ISO handling. IT would however likely give me a better AF experience (although I'd have to give up the jewel of the 17-55).
OR I could save for either the 5dmk2, or 1dmk3. Less compromise, but more moola. I could make this all happen easily, I just have lots of expensive hobbies, and don't want to neglect any.
Sorry about the ramblings, but I'd love to hear outside thoughts on this since I'm being totally irrational, haha.
Only thing for sure is that Im going to be holding a mk3 for Daytona this year. That thing is magical, even if I am just borrowing it.
