First visit to Baskett Slough Refuge west of Salem, Oregon greeted by dense fog which cleared briefly just as we were sneaking up on a group of Pintail ducks. One of my first shots with a sharp 300mm f4 IS lens purchased from Crag Yannuzzi here on FM.
Also a Coot shot yesterday at Tualatin NWR (backlighting issue but I forged ahead!). Can't wait for some more ideal conditions to test this lens fully....Thanks Craig!

Hi Mike
Doesn't look like you were blessed with much light on that first shot. Those pintails are really beauties with good light on them As a thought, you may want to opt for less f/stop and more shutter speed on these, as I hear it something more in the 1/1250-1/2000 . Don't be afraid of that lens wide open as they are known for their sharpness.
Congrats on the lens Mike! I know we PM'd about it but just to reinforce it, you'll love that lens. I do agree with Karl, open it up a bit more now and again and see how you like it. Nice shot of the pintails taking flight. Oh the fog, it is that time of year!!

Thanks for the encouragement and advice. Was very frustrating both Sat and Sun with strong backlighting from the photoblind one day and dense fog the next but heck good stuff never comes easy (I have learned that winter steelhead fishing with flies!!!
Yep, Karl nailed it with the shoot wide open and go for the speed. You'll never stop with a shutter speed under about 1/1000. Still, good job tracking them and gaining focus. Here's wishing you blue sky mornings

Having grown up in Fullerton and having taken pictures at Parma Park (the "center" of the Tea Fire) those fires disturbed me in general and in very specific ways.
I hope that all or most of the Acorn Woodpeckers in Parma Park escaped!
