Long time ago I was a ringer (Cowhand to you lot) in FNQ (Far North Queensland). these guys were serious. Roping didnt enter into it. They would gallop flat strap along side a grown steer, lean out, grab the tail and jump off. The trick was then as your heels hit the ground, you were meant to jerk the steers tail sidewise and throw him off balance and then to sit on his head till someone helped you tie him up.
Me? I only tried it once, and the old hands were still laughing about my effort (I seemed to miss everything and cartwheeled for about 800 yards) when I left eighteen months later.
