p.1 #1 · Pocket Wizard II's failed me! :(

My Pocket Wizard II's failed me yesterday at a shoot! I had one on my 20D and the other connected to my 580ex II on a light stand with umbrella. It was about 50ft but it would not trigger? I had direct line of sight. I tested it when I got home in the house and from about 30ft through a wall it fired every time! Figure that out.

Any help anyone?

Martin.

Fresh batteries and make sure the channel is correct.

Yup most common problem is weak batteries. Even when the red light is flashing, sometime it's not enough. What Red suggested, and also I use gafer-tape down the sync cords' ends to make sure they don't move by accident.

Were you outside? Mine don't seem to reliably fire at 50ft outside either.

well I thought it might be the batteries so changed them. Made no difference. Both on same channel, duh.

And yes it was outside. Wonder if I should send them in?

I don't know what it is, but I'm in the same boat as you. New batteries, work fine... but outdoors, I just don't get much range.

Sucks. Does any one get good range outdoors with them?

I have shot over 100' with mine no problem! But I do notice that if the batteries arent fresh its pretty spotty.

How do you position the receiver? The manual says you can have problem from a poorly positioned antenna.

I was going to say the same thing. You need the antenna of the receiver above the flash unit and they supply velcro to attach the unit to avoid shorting out.

My transmitter flaked the other day and it was possibly the positioning. I need to check but it was working fine for the first 50 shots then it stopped working. The receiver was working fine, it was the transmitter. I will have to further testing but if there is still a problem then it will need to go back to the manufacturer for repair.

Also, make sure the Local / Both / Remote switch is in the right place. Sometimes they get nudged just a bit out of place so make sure it's at either end or firmly in the middle.

I have had ongoing problems since I bought mine in May. I sent all three of them in last week for evaluation/repair... haven't gotten them back.

I mount mine to a flat bracket with the antenna pointing up. Nothing fancy, just a cold shoe.

What PC cords are you using? Many often stated that it was the aftermarket cords which fail. PW don't fail, so I heard.

Good point. I've had misfiring issues with some cords as well.

I'm just using the cord that came in the box.

I'd be interested in finding what everybody's solution is to this? I posted about something similar happening to my PWs lately (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/700605/0#6329676).

Regarding having the antennae above the flash, where did you hear about that? First time I have heard that.

I've found that mini jacks are much more reliable than pc cords. A Paul Buff rep made that suggestion and I haven't had a misfire since.

Never had a failure, tested up to 450' outside. It's usually a failed cord or actual sync connection.

PC ports are notoriously crappy connections. I'll put a dollar that the PC connection was your point of failure.
