I've recently chosen 1DsMkII over upcoming 5DMkII.
I upgraded from 5D.
While 5D was a wonderful camera for me, this 1DsMkII is ... out of this world.
I originally thought that I'd use 1DsMkII until 5DMkII came out and all the reviews were written, but I changed my mind now.
I don't care what 5DMkII looks like or capable of, but my camera, and one and the only one, will be 1DsMkII.
I'd strongly recommend this camera to anyone.
The build and AF ... and the image quality....I couldn't ask more.
And at current used price, I consider it as the most value/performance camera on the market.
Man...I'm proud of myself to made such decision....Show more →
certainly a great cam but the most value?? the 1dsmkiii is a most bang for the buck
I said this before and I will repeat it again. No matter what Canon says, it will never share the same sensor technology of the 1Ds series with a cheaper camera, period. I've owned 2 5D bodies, an original 1Ds, and currently a 1Ds2 (that I've used for 6 months with a 5D back up). To my eyes, the 1Ds2 sensor even with more mp is incomparable to the 5D, especially in shadow noise and color depth. Heck, even the original 1Ds files (at lower iso) were better.
I still maintain that the 1Ds Mk II's IQ is no better than the 1Ds Mk III .... and it won't be better than the 5D Mk II either. The same photographer will be able to repeat these images with the 1Ds Mk III or the 5D Mk II .... with a bit more detail and less noise. The IQ comes not only from a good camera but also (a) a good eye, (b) good technique and exposure/capture, (c) good lens, and (d) good work flow and post-processing skills. No matter how good the camera is, if you are missing these other skills, your images will be just mediocre at best.
My money is on the 5D II, as I believe this camera is capable of churning out not only brilliant IQ but it has what I consider to be essential new features like a self-cleaning sensor, live view, a 3" VGA screen, and useable high ISO - which is almost equivalent to a super-expensive fast lens. These new features will take your photography experience and enjoyment to a whole new level.
This Kyoung Kim is very good and it doesn't matter whether he shoots with 1Ds II, 5D or D300. Even with a Rebel, he will create better images than an average Joe with a 1Ds Mk III or D3.

Ditto. The impressive nature of these images has much more to do with lighting, technique and PP than it has to do with the IDs II's sensor.

back to the OP, you are absolutely right Paul - at current used price, ds2 is the most value/performance camera on the market. so congratulation on your new toy. You will not miss anything in a year or two for sure.
If people can make images like the ones you see on this thread with this camera, I don't need any other camera for the rest of my life, that is unless I turn pro.
Then again, that's what I said when I upgraded to 5D from 20D....

I am not trying to be funny .... but if you cannot make images like this with your 5D or even 20D, you are unlikely to be able to make images like this with your 1Ds Mk II or any other DSLR for that matter, regardless of price. Sorry to tell you it's NOT the camera!

I wish someone would show me how to obtain the exposure of that last photo...I would like to think that the neck down is not done in PS but rather with DOF and overexposure.
You are right - it's overexposure with a bank of light. Love this absolutely stunning high key image.
