Thanks Avi, I already did!
And thanks too for making it.
I may be new to posting in the Nikon forum, but you can see that I've been on FM for years, and even before that as a lurker. Admiring the work of some amazingly talented people, helping me to learn new techniques and tips along the way. I've lurked the Nikon forum extensively since I knew that I'd be getting a D300 at some point and there are some truly great and helpful people here (I'm talking FM in general).
It does seem like some DPR-types are trickling over though, but hopefully they'll be weeded out soon enough.
I *LOVE* the new "HIDE ME" button! I finally put it to use for the first time today.
Welcome to the land of Nikon EOS-1D. I'm just south of Pittsburgh but get up to Cleveland a few times a year. Here's one from your zoo. We don't have any cheetahs in Pittsburgh.
Thanks gman, and beautiful shot!
I live about 20 minutes from the zoo and I haven't been there in probably 4 or 5 years. My daughter is just getting old enough to really appreciate it (she's 2 1/2) and my son was 4 or 5 the last time we went so I think it's about time to make a family trip with the new gear.

What setup did you use for the cheetah?
Thanks
D700, 300 2.8 VR with the TC-17 II 1.7 teleconverter mounted. I couldn't get far enough away to get the whole guy framed and I didn't want to bother removing the teleconverter in the cold. So I just did a quick pano. It really is a nice zoo for pictures and it will be even better when they get the new elephant habitat done. Here's an elevated shot you can get of the giraffes that you can't get in Pittsburgh either...
Great camera choice in that D300. I'm not one who has used Canon except in the store, but I think you will enjoy the Nikon line. It has pluses and minuses vs. Canon, but we like it.
One of the nice things with Nikon is that a lot of the low end glass actually does a great job. Granted, it isn't pro glass, but it is a lot better than it should be for the money. I've heard rumors that you don't find that in every brand.
In any case, welcome to this side. I'm ex-Navy, so I wouldn't have been offended by your other handle, but I understand what you are saying about that.
Thanks BluePixel. I'll PM you when I can get everything arranged, probably in the next few weeks.
Thanks David.
"Being better than it should be for the money" is exactly why I chose the 55-200 and 18-200. I don't think I've heard anything bad about either, except maybe a few QC-issue copies. Still need some fast glass someday, but I have a feeling I'll be happy with one of the 2 until that day.
I understand the complaint the Mods had, too. That's why I didn't argue the truth and reality with them. They wanted a nice, quiet little family-oriented setup, so I just said "fine".
Gotta pick your battles...
Lucky for you you're not on dpreview with that handle, talk about a war zone!
Oh, and I mean your current handle, not the USMC one
FWIW- Sigma has some good dx glass, the 30mm f1.4 being the first that comes to mind. If you can afford it the 17-55mm f2.8 Nikon is super solid. The only caveat there is if you think you may go fx someday these two will be less useful.
I curious why the 50D wasn't of interest and what the D300 has over the 40D. Maybe you should PM your reply, I really don't want to start a gear war in your thread but I am curious as I've never used any Canon gear. There are a few of us who still have an open mind and don't think Nikon is better simply because we own it.
Here's a memory for ya. Indeed I had and loved that 1D back in the day. I fully agree, it was the magic of those large pixels that made it. This was taken with that camera and a 16-35 f2.8 when I used to travel for a living.
That is "Lone Peak" in the Wasatch Range of mountains on the Eastern border of the Salt Lake Valley. I live on the West corner of the valley that that is a view from my front lawn. Not a bad place to hang out

Not that I want to start a war either, but even as a happy 40D owner who loves the files it produces (and not just because they pay my bills) it's a pretty easy question to answer, for a mere few hundred $ (or £ where I am) you get -
- Full weather sealing as opposed to a pathetic little strip of foam in the CF compartment
- Pro AF
- Native (and apparently very useable) ISO3200
- 8 FPS as opposed to 6.3
- 2 extra megapixels
- VGA 920,000 dot screen as opposed to an overstretched one that for some inexplicable reason shows all my thumbnails with a purple cast.
For someone starting out today and looking to go pro I think it's a bit of a no-brainer that you'd buy Nikon, the 1Ds III is the only Canon camera at the top of its field (in my not very humble opinion) and I wish I had the guts/spare cash to switch myself
In the last 12-14 months you would'nt believe how close I got to clicking my mouse for a D3. Then low and behold along came the '700. Good stuff I gotta tell ya. Really, really good stuff....
I need to learn what yall are doing to get refunds cause I always am scrambling to find a way to reduce what I have to pay despite my regular contributions throughout the year!
I can only speak for myself, but I have 2 kids and a wife that pretty much refuses to work (I like to tell people that I am Al Bundy, minus the cool job of selling woman's shoes, for any other "Married, with Children..." fans). So I get head of household and every body else is a dependent.
