p.1 #1 · This Autumn in Glacier Park

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to squeeze enough time out of my day to browse some of the new Autumn posts here on FM and share a few of my own. Specifically, I'm going to start with this presentation taken from Glacier NP. in Montana. The images you see here were captured over the course of 18 days in September and October before I headed north to Canada. Of course, I'd appreciate any commentary and discussion. I'd be happy to answer questions as time allows. I'd welcome any C&C you can offer as well.

Thanks!

Marc

*All images: Canon 1Ds III, Canon L glass, Singh-Ray and B+W filters.

1: Sunrise, clearing snowstorm, Many Glacier region. Peaceful, yes, though it was taken in 40mph winds and driving sleet. 16mm, 2-stop GND, 1/10 sec. at f/14. Sky/Land processed seperately in RAW and Blended at varying opacities for best color rendition.

2. Climbed down a cliff just off Going-to-the-Sun road to get this perspective. 2 stacked 3-stop GND's gives the strong magenta, which I like. Blended from 1 other exposure on either side to prevent total loss of details. 16mm, 4 seconds at f/14.

3. Singleshot mountain and rainbows, St. Mary region. St. Mary river in foreground. 22mm, 1 second at f/16, polarizer + 2 stop soft GND.

4. Near West Glacier enterance. Mist clears at sunrise. Larch trees are at their Autumn peak. 77mm, 3-stop reverse GND, 1 second at f/9

5: Near Babb, Montana. East Glacier. 65mm, polarizer, 1/125 second at f/13. Emerging light partially diffused.

6: St. Mary lakeshore pines and grasses blowing in the wind. 33mm, 1/100 second at f/14. No PS work of any kind except B&W conversion.

7: McDonald creek. Use of negative space eliminates brushy distractions. Exposure of 11 minutes for the sky highlights.

8: Near Many Glacier. Clearing storm at sunset. Fought off an incredible amount of willow-brush and nearly died on slippery rocks. 1 second at f/18, polarizer, 3-stop GND moved during the exposure. Blend for top of peak area.

9: McDonald creek, near Avalanche Creek. Sunrise light filtering down through the clouds and peaks. Gotta love how long those magic hours last at Northerly latitudes this time of year! This taken at 8:30 am. 24mm, 2-stop GND, polarizer, 1/2 second at f/18.

10: Classic morning shot of St. Mary Lake. Standing in 2-feet of water to get this perspective. Saw Mr. Forester and Kuglin this morning while I was leading a private tour. Nice guys. One heck of a sunrise! 16mm, 1/2 second at f/16.

Superb work. There are no images I dislike, three of them I like more:

The aspens (N° 5), i really like the color gradation going from coldish greens through warm oranges to yellows and finally greens again; the white-light grey verticals (trree trunks) thrown in there (composed) work beautifully.

The BW pictury: dichotomy, different forms of evolution, habitat, adaptation (acclimation). It goes to the essence of what life forms have to achieve there in order to not only survive, but also to thrive.

The blue shot: if there's a moody image in this set, this is the one. The streaking thing (star ?) in the sky could have been cloned out, I am glad you left it.

The blue shot is quite exceptional . Do you ever have dull / grey / overcast / boring skies like the rest of us when you venture out with your camera ? I don't think you live in the same world as me . Joke , BTW

Marc, simply a fantastic series -- I can't find a thing I would change about any of them. You captured the atmosphere of the park very well and the quality of the light and compositions is exquisite. I think this is easily one of the best series of images I have seen in a long time.

This recent trip I was very lucky with that. In November 06' when I was up there, I was, at one point, stuck in my tent for 12 days of heavy rain, sleet and snowfall.

Marc

You are one very gifted photographer. All of the shot are quite exceptional. It is just so hard to pick out just one that would be a favorite. Looking forward to see what you have come back with from Canada. Btw it was nice meeting you in Glacier.

Another fine set of images Marc, always inspiring. Hard to pick a favorite, you certainly got some fantastic lighting for each of these!

Could you provide any additional insight into your processing in general? Your images (especially the most recent ones) have an incredibly special glow of soft tones and delicate tonal variations. Also how do you get such crisp web renditions, I always have trouble getting the fine details to show at these sizes, but yours certainly show them.

ps - took a peek at your new winter shots from Canada on photo.net... you're making me wish I could quite grad school and do the same!

You find time to do wonderful work considering your other responsibilities!

I've spent a lot of time discussing my philosophies on PP on a number of forums. The discussion over on Pnet here:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7617404

may provide some useful insight on what I'm after. My images rely on a very painterly style of realism that enhances the feeling of depth and adds luminosity. Depth and luminosity are two of the biggest essentials lost on the photographic medium. Painters are some of my biggest inspirations. I love the way they can create beautiful, radiant landscapes with such a strong 3-D quality, but I love the exacting detail and accuracy rendered in a photograph. I strive for both.

Going into the technical details of how to do this in PS could be a couple chapters in a book, and still relatively useless to those who haven't developed an eye discerning enough to make the adjustments look right in the first place. It's somewhat of an innate ability, like many things in art, but it can be learned to some extent. It's not all about processing either. So much of it is identifying in which scenes you can record and develop that certain look that your after, using your vision of the finished image as a map throughout all steps of the process. My advice would be to not try to mimic a specific style so much (not saying that you are, of course) but to keep experimenting and building on what you know. The development of one's personal style is important.

Marc, another outstanding series. I really like 1,2, and 5 for their quality of light and unique views to the park (in the first two at least). 7, 9, and 10 also stand out to me, but I'm sure several of these will be in calendars in the next couple of years!
