Hi Benedictine,
I know how hard self portraits can be and you have pulled this one off very well. A really stunning image. I wonder if you could have sent the message even more clearly by having your hands together in the commonly understood image of prayer. However as i say a really good image.
Take care
Mark
Thanks Mark for this, I appreciate your comments. As far as the hands are concerned I did try it but two things put me off, firstly I had trouble getting the focus right as I had then to use the camera’s timer rather than using a remote switch which I did here. Secondly, and at least to me more importantly, I do not put my hands together during contemplation!

Hi Andrew,
Understand your predicament now, your hand cant be in two places at once
Also apologise for my misunderstanding of the differances between prayer and contemplation.
As i say its a difficult thing to do, and get yourself in focus. I also started using f4 as i wanted the bgd out of focus. Then found out that with a 50mm lens at f4 the depth of field at 5ft subject to lens distance is only 6 inches. At 4ft this reduces to 4in etc....
Changed my f number to 8 and had a great deal more success as my effective dof doubled.
Take care
Mark
Back from a few days away and just want to thank you all for your helpful and encouraging comments. I have learned a lot from this assignment and your comments are definitely a part of that learning process. Cheers,

IMHO there's no need to improve lighting in this pic. A bit less on the forehead would be nice (e.g. EC-0.5) but then, the details in the neck would have been lost. Some sort of a shade maybe?
